Developing a Fuel Cell Generator Utilizing the Mirai FCV System

In September 2019, Toyota Motor Corporation announced the development of a stationary fuel cell generator that utilizes the fuel cell system installed in the Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) Mirai. The generator has been installed on the premises of its main plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, where demonstration testing is underway.

Future Commercialization of Fuel Cell Generators Also Under Consideration

The newly introduced fuel cell (FC) generator uses two sets each of the FC stack, power control unit (PCU), and secondary batteries that comprise the FC system in the Mirai. Toyota and Toyota Energy Solutions jointly developed the generator with the aim of manufacturing high-performance, low-cost equipment by leveraging the Mirai's FC system.
For the demonstration, the electricity generated by this unit is used within the main plant. The generator operates continuously 24 hours a day at a rated output of 100 kW, verifying and evaluating energy efficiency per amount of hydrogen consumed, power output stability, durability, and maintainability.
Moving forward, based on the demonstration results, Toyota plans to expand the introduction of FC generators as in-house power generation facilities at its plants. Furthermore, the hydrogen used as fuel will be recycled from the manufacturing and testing processes of FC-related components. The company will advance the development and implementation of technologies for efficient hydrogen utilization.
Toyota also stated that by developing such technologies, it is steadily working towards the realization of the "Plant CO2 Zero Challenge," one of the "Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050" goals announced in 2015.
In addition, with the aim of commercializing FC generators in the future, Toyota is pursuing research and development to enhance product competitiveness—including improvements in energy efficiency, durability, compactness, and cost reduction—along with exploring business models.
