BMW Launches First M Motorcycle, the M 1000 RR
BMW announced that reservations will open on Monday, February 1, 2021, for the M 1000 RR, its first M model motorcycle.
A High-Performance Model Infused with Circuit-Tuned Technology
Based on the current S 1000 RR, the high-performance M 1000 RR is finally set for release.
The engine is the same four-cylinder unit as the S 1000 RR, but with increased peak output to 156kW (212ps) and maximum torque to 113Nm. The maximum engine speed has also been raised to 15,100rpm. Furthermore, it features new Mahle two-ring forged pistons, revised combustion chambers, and a titanium camshaft and lightweight exhaust system, evolving to deliver performance befitting an M model.
Notably, the engine has been designed to be more powerful in the 6,000rpm to 15,100rpm range, which is particularly relevant for dynamic driving on the circuit.
The M winglets and high windshield were developed through testing on the track and in BMW's wind tunnel to maximize the contact between the wheels and the road during acceleration.
BMW claims that the aerodynamic downforce generated at speed increases tire contact pressure, and the increased downforce suppresses wheelies, reducing traction control intervention and converting more power into acceleration for faster lap times.
This downforce from the M winglets is effective during cornering and braking, allowing for later braking points and improved cornering stability.
Additionally, the chassis design has been modified and adjusted for track use, optimizing wheel load distribution. The swingarm pivot is newly designed with an expanded adjustment range. The rear axle is also newly designed, and the adoption of a rear brake caliper with quick-release functionality allows for rapid rear wheel changes.
The brakes also feature M components, developed based on the experience of BMW Motorrad's factory machines in the Superbike World Championship.
To coincide with this launch, BMW Motorrad is also running a pre-order campaign: customers who reserve the M 1000 RR between February 1 and April 30, 2021, will receive an "M Bike Floor Mat" featuring the M logo and design.
The price is 3,783,000 yen, with the M Competition Package at 4,280,000 yen. Deliveries are scheduled for summer 2021.
