The LC500 Convertible Model Makes its World Premiere
Lexus unveiled the convertible version of its flagship coupe, the LC500, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car will be on display at the show, which runs from November 18th to December 1st, 2019.
The Entire Body Re-engineered to Pursue the Coupe's Driving Dynamics in a Convertible
The convertible model of the LC, whose production had already been announced, has finally been unveiled.
The exterior design offers an open-air feel when the top is down, while the soft top maintains the coupe's flowing roofline when closed. The pursuit of beautiful silhouettes in both configurations was paramount. A folding mechanism with a tonneau cover has been adopted to ensure a sleek profile even when the soft top is stowed.
The roof can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h, with particular attention paid to the speed and motion of the operation.
In terms of performance, the entire body has been re-engineered to replicate the coupe's driving dynamics in the convertible. This includes high body rigidity, a flowing design, ample luggage space, and a package optimized for a convertible.
The powertrain features the same 5.0-liter V8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission as the LC, delivering linear acceleration with a sense of extension. To enjoy the evocative sound of the naturally aspirated NA engine in a convertible, a sound generator resonates intake noise into the cabin, and an external valve enhances the exhaust note, creating a more exhilarating sound when the roof is open.
Inside, to create a cabin environment where conversations can be enjoyed naturally even with the top down, aerodynamic performance was considered in the design of the beltline and rear contours. A transparent polycarbonate wind deflector suppresses uncomfortable airflow within the cabin while maintaining a sense of openness, thereby enhancing quietness.
The LC500 Convertible model is scheduled for release in Japan around the summer of 2020.
