Alfa Romeo Announces the Compact SUV "Tonale"
On February 8th (local time), Alfa Romeo of Italy announced the new "Tonale" compact SUV. The powertrain options include a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a 48V hybrid, and a diesel. Like its SUV sibling "Stelvio," the name "Tonale" is derived from the name of a mountain pass in the Italian Alps.
Adopting Alfa's Traditional Design
The Tonale measures a compact 4.53 meters in length, 1.8 meters in width, and 1.6 meters in height. Targeted at young, urban, and active users, the Tonale features a distinctive, sensual, and forward-looking design. Elements like the five-hole "telephone dial" wheels, the "telescopic" instrument panel, the three-spoke sport steering wheel, and the sine wave headlights establish a design language that will set the standard for future Alfa Romeo models.
Continuing Alfa's heritage, the "GT line" running from the rear to the headlights, along with its wide and elegant volume, evokes iconic models such as the Giulia GT and 8C Competizione.
The front features the unique "Trilobo" signature, with the iconic Alfa Romeo "Scudetto" shield at its center. The new "3+3" headlights with full LED adaptive matrix lighting recall the proud styling of the SZ Zagato and Proteo concept cars.
Among the diverse powertrain options, the top-performance "Plug-in Hybrid Q4" model combines a 1.3-liter "MultiAir" gasoline turbo engine driving the front wheels with an electric motor driving the rear, producing a total output of 275 hp. It achieves 0-100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, with an electric-only driving range of up to 80 km in city cycles (over 60 km in combined cycles), setting a class-leading benchmark for the segment. Using a 7.4 kW fast charger, a full battery charge takes only 2.5 hours.
Two hybrid versions are available. The Hybrid GTV (Variable Geometry Turbo) engine, producing 160 hp, is paired with a 7-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission, a 48V main power system, and a "P2" electric motor generating 15 kW/55 Nm. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine allows for EV driving even when stationary, and the transmission enables pure electric mode driving at low speeds, during parking, and while cruising.
A 130 hp hybrid version is also offered, featuring the same 7-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission and a 48V "P2" motor.
Additionally, a version combining a diesel engine with a 6-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive will be available from launch. The diesel engine has a displacement of 1.6 liters, producing a maximum output of 130 hp and a maximum torque of 320 Nm.
The launch commemorative edition, "EDIZIONE SPECIALE," will begin accepting orders in April via a dedicated website.
