The First BEV in BMW's Small Compact Segment
The BMW X1 is a compact SUV, the entry model of the X series, which BMW calls a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). It combines the practicality unique to SUVs with the agile driving performance characteristic of BMW.
The third-generation model sees a complete overhaul of its design, user interface, and powertrain. Additionally, the BMW iX1, the first BEV in BMW's small compact segment, has been added to the lineup.
The refreshed exterior design, in line with recent BMW models, features a large, near-square kidney grille and adaptive LED headlights that evolve BMW's traditional four-round headlight design.
The rear design is characterized by a wide, powerful horizontal character line and three-dimensional LED rear combination lights. The sides feature flush door handles integrated into the door panels, contributing to aerodynamics while exuding a sporty yet elegant impression.
The new X1 is available in two design lines: xLine, which offers an elegant finish while maintaining a modern image, and M Sport, which enhances the sporty character.
The interior features the BMW Curved Display, which integrates the instrument cluster and control display. It is angled towards the driver for improved visibility and offers enhanced operability through touch controls. Furthermore, the interface has been revamped, with the elimination of the shift lever and the consolidation of all controls into the center armrest.
The rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split-folding function. The luggage space of the BMW X1 xDrive20i offers 540 liters with all seats in use, expanding to a maximum of 1,600 liters when the rear seats are folded flat.
The powertrain lineup includes gasoline engines and BEVs. BMW explains the introduction of BEVs as part of its commitment to achieving a sustainable society and its desire to allow a wide range of customers in the entry-level segment to enjoy BMW's BEV technology.
The gasoline engine model, the BMW X1 xDrive20i, is equipped with a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine paired with a 7-speed double-clutch transmission, producing a maximum output of 150 kW at 5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm between 1,450 and 4,500 rpm. Through optimizations such as improved aerodynamics, it achieves a fuel efficiency of 12.9 km/L in WLTC mode and 14.3 km/L in JC08 mode.
The BEV, BMW iX1 xDrive30, is an all-wheel-drive model featuring electric motors on the front and rear axles, delivering a combined maximum output of 200 kW and a peak torque of 494 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
The lithium-ion battery, housed beneath the vehicle's floor, has a capacity of 66.5 kWh, providing a driving range of 465 km on a single charge.
Charging is supported via both standard and rapid charging (CHAdeMO). Using an 8 kW BMW Wall Box (200V/32A) at home, it takes approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.
With a 90 kW rapid charger, it takes about 50 minutes to charge from 10% to approximately 80%. It can also charge from 10% to 55% in about 30 minutes.
The M Sport models and the iX1 xDrive30 xLine come standard with Adaptive M Suspension, which lowers the vehicle height by 20 mm compared to models with standard suspension.
The driving assistance systems are also equipped with the latest technology, featuring enhanced precision and accuracy as standard. These include Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking (with steering assist), Cross Traffic Warning, and unintended acceleration prevention.
The vehicle prices are 5.56 million yen for the BMW X1 xDrive20i xLine and BMW X1 xDrive20i M Sport, and 6.68 million yen for the BMW iX1 xDrive30 xLine and BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late February.
