Ferrari's V6 PHEV Two-Seater Berlinetta, the "296 GTB," Arrives in Japan

On October 14, Ferrari Japan unveiled the "296 GTB," a two-seater berlinetta with a mid-mounted V6 engine, for the first time in Japan.

In keeping with Ferrari tradition, the model name combines the displacement of 2.9 liters and the number of cylinders, 6, with GTB, the acronym for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The powertrain features a new 2,992cc V6 engine with IHI turbochargers mounted between the 120-degree V-banks, producing a maximum output of 663 cv at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 740 Nm at 6,250 rpm. By incorporating a 122 kW (167 cv) electric motor, known as MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit Kinetic), between the engine and the 8-speed DCT gearbox, a system maximum output of 830 cv is achieved.
The rear-wheel-drive PHEV system can be disengaged by the Transition Manager Actuator (TMA), allowing for eDrive-only operation with a range of 25 km and a top speed of 135 km/h. When using both the ICE (engine) and the electric motor simultaneously, there are modes such as "Hybrid," "Performance," and "Qualify." In maximum performance, it boasts a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 2.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 7.3 seconds, a top speed of 330 km/h, and a lap time of 1 minute 21 seconds on the Fiorano test circuit.
In terms of driving sound, it is characterized by its ability to harmonize the power of the turbo with the high-frequency harmony reminiscent of a naturally aspirated V12, which can be enjoyed both inside and outside the car. For this reason, the V6 engine was nicknamed "Piccolo V12 (Mini V12)" during its development.
The body measures 4,565 mm in length, 1,958 mm in width, and 1,187 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The dry weight is 1,470 kg. The exterior design is clean and simple, inspired by the 1963 250 LM, evident in its undulating body, the design of the B-pillar, the fenders with integrated air intakes, and the delicately balanced Kamm tail.
The cabin features a visor-style front windshield that curves into the side windows, a concept previously seen in limited and one-off models like the J50 and P80/C. The tapering front section and the "Fairing in Teardrop," reminiscent of past teardrop headlights, are particularly striking design elements.
The interior follows the new concept of a fully digital interface seen in the SF90 Stradale, featuring a pure and minimalist layout. Pressing the "Start Engine" button gradually brings all components to life. The passenger side also comes standard with a passenger display, offering a co-driver-like experience.
Additionally, for users seeking maximum performance, an "ASSETTO FIORANO" package is available, offering a total weight reduction of 12 kg. A special paint scheme inspired by the 250 Le Mans can also be ordered.
