Maserati World Premieres the New Super Sports Car MC20
On September 9, Maserati held the world premiere of its new super sports car, the MC20. The announcement was made at the "MMXX: Time to be audacious" event in Modena, with simultaneous unveilings in Tokyo and New York. The "MC" in the new MC20 stands for Maserati Corse, and "20" signifies 2020, the year of its world premiere and the dawn of a new era for the brand.
0-100 km/h Acceleration Under 2.9 Seconds, Top Speed Over 325 km/h
The MC20's powertrain features the 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo Nettuno engine, developed entirely by Maserati, producing a maximum output of 630 ps and a peak torque of 730 Nm. This power is delivered to the rear wheels via an 8-speed DCT gearbox. It achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 325 km/h.
The body dimensions are 4,699 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width, and 1,221 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
The vehicle weighs under 1,500 kg, achieving a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 2.33 kg/ps. The Nettuno engine, with its innovative MTC (Maserati Twin Combustion) system for which an international patent has already been granted, marks a new chapter in Maserati's history.
The design of the MC20 was created by a unified team of engineers from the Maserati Innovation Lab, technical specialists from the Maserati Engine Lab, and designers from the Maserati Centro Stile over approximately 24 months. The virtual vehicle dynamics development system, utilizing a cutting-edge dynamic simulator, was developed in-house by the Maserati Innovation Lab, achieving 97% of the performance of dynamic tests and shortening the development period. This was followed by thorough circuit and road testing for final adjustments to the machine.
The guiding theme for the design is Maserati's identity since its founding: elegance, performance, and comfort are all inherited in Maserati's DNA. The butterfly doors, a first for the brand, are not only strikingly beautiful but also functional, improving cabin ergonomics and access.
Aerodynamics were designed through over 2,000 hours of testing in Dallara's wind tunnel and more than 1,000 CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations. A discreet rear spoiler enhances downforce without compromising aesthetics, achieving a drag coefficient (Cx) of less than 0.38. Furthermore, the MC20 was designed to accommodate coupe, convertible, and fully electric variants.
The interior is designed with the primary focus on creating an environment where the driver can concentrate on driving. Two 10-inch screens are present: one for the cockpit and another for the Maserati Multimedia System (MIA). The carbon fiber-clad center console houses a wireless smartphone charger, driving mode selector (GT, Wet, Sport, Corsa, ESC Off), two gear shift buttons, power window controls, and multimedia system controls.
Six new exclusive exterior colors have been developed to characterize the MC20: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma, and Grigio Mistero. All colors are new shades specifically conceived, developed, and adjusted for this model, marking the first Maserati product to be painted at the Modena plant.
Visually and conceptually, the MC20 draws strong inspiration from the MC12, which marked Maserati's return to racing in 2004. The MC20 can be considered its successor, and plans are in place for a return to motorsport.
Orders opened on September 10th, following the world premiere. Production will take place at the Viale Ciro Menotti factory, where Maserati's masterpieces have been built for over 80 years. The price in Japan is 26.5 million yen.
