A Mobility Testbed for a Richer Society, Home to 2,000 Residents

The birth of Toyota Woven City, declared by Toyota at CES 2020, is finally drawing near.
Toyota Woven City is rising on the former site of Toyota Motor East Japan's Higashi-Fuji Plant at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
It is a place for demonstration, not only by Toyota but also by various companies such as Daikin Industries, Nissin Foods, and DyDo DRINCO, as "Inventors" aiming for the "expansion of mobility" and a richer society. It is a real mobility testbed, and also a place where residents, the "Weavers," will live.
Its design and construction have been recognized for their focus on human well-being, including environmental considerations and the improvement of QOL (Quality of Life), earning it the Platinum certification, the highest rank, in LEED for Communities, an environmental performance rating system for buildings and urban areas operated by the U.S. Green Building Council – a first for Japan.
Furthermore, some of the buildings at the Higashi-Fuji Plant are being renovated and will be utilized as the starting point for manufacturing within Toyota Woven City. Construction for Phase 2 has reportedly already begun.
For the official launch planned for autumn 2025 or later, approximately 100 individuals from Toyota, Woven by Toyota, and their families will participate in demonstrations as residents. Subsequently, this will gradually expand to include external inventors and their families, with approximately 360 residents planned for Phase 1.
It is expected to grow into a "city" where about 2,000 Weavers will live in the future, with plans for general public participation starting from fiscal year 2026.
Looking ahead, Toyota Woven City is envisioned for use by startups, entrepreneurs, and universities/research institutions, with applications for an accelerator program set to open around summer 2025.
Toyota Woven City is a challenging mobility testbed where demonstrations will be conducted not only for mobility as mere transportation, but also to move people, goods, information, and energy, thereby expanding what mobility can do for people and society.
What form will Toyota Woven City take upon its official launch this autumn or later? And how will it evolve? For now, we eagerly await its unveiling.
