New Designs Adopted for Exterior and Interior
Lexus has made minor changes to its flagship sedan, the LS, and commenced sales.
Models Equipped with Advanced Drive Driver Assistance Technology Launched in 2021
The LS, born in America in 1989, underwent a full model change to its fifth generation in 2017. This time, it has been given a minor change, incorporating new designs for the exterior and interior, along with improvements to fundamental driving performance such as quietness and ride comfort.
The exterior features a redesigned headlamp area. The front grille and rear combination lamps have altered surface treatments, enhancing their sophisticated presence. Additionally, a new body color, "Silver Shadow (Gin'ei)" Luster, has been introduced, achieved through advanced painting technology to realize deep shadows and a lustrous, mirror-like texture.
The interior sees improved operability with the adoption of a touch display. Furthermore, to integrate a worldview derived from Japan's unique aesthetic sensibilities into the cabin, new materials such as Nishijin-ori woven with silver threads and platinum foil, crafted by artisans, have been newly set as ornaments.
Comfort has also been enhanced by changing the stitching position of the seat upholstery to a deeper location and adopting newly developed low-rebound urethane pads, which absorb vibrations for a soft seating feel.
In terms of powertrain, the acceleration response of the "LS500"'s 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo engine has been improved by refining the engine torque build-up. The shift schedule has also been revised, expanding the range where acceleration can be achieved while maintaining the current gear, thereby reducing the frequency of downshifts. Additionally, combustion efficiency has been improved through optimization of the combustion chamber shape, which is said to contribute to output, fuel economy, and quietness.
Safety equipment includes the "Lexus Safety System+A" as standard on all models, with expanded and evolved functions. Notably, the Pre-Collision Safety system can now detect oncoming straight-moving vehicles when turning right at an intersection, as well as crossing pedestrians when turning right or left. Furthermore, functions such as collision avoidance and damage mitigation support at low speeds, including low-speed acceleration suppression, have been added.
Additionally, it was announced that an LS equipped with "Advanced Drive," an advanced driver assistance technology that supports appropriate recognition, judgment, and operation by the in-car system according to the actual traffic conditions under driver supervision on expressways and other motorways, will be launched in 2021. This system enables lane and inter-vehicle distance maintenance, branching, lane changes, and overtaking.
Prices range from 11.14 million yen to 15.80 million yen for the "LS500" equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo engine. The hybrid model, "LS500h," ranges from 12.60 million yen to 17.28 million yen.
