Toyota Unveils New Compact SUV "Corolla Cross" Globally for the First Time in Thailand
On July 9, Toyota globally unveiled the new compact SUV, the "Corolla Cross," as a new addition to the Corolla series in Thailand. Sales began in Thailand on the same day, with plans to gradually expand to other countries.
Two Powertrain Options: Gasoline and Hybrid
Since the first model was launched in Japan in 1966, the Corolla series has sold a cumulative total of over 48 million units in more than 150 countries and regions, making it Toyota's global best-selling car. With the addition of the Corolla Cross, which caters to the growing global demand for SUVs, customers can now choose from an even more comprehensive lineup.
The new Corolla Cross measures 4,460mm in length, 1,825mm in width, and 1,620mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,640mm. Utilizing the TNGA (GA-C) platform, it features a new torsion beam suspension that delivers stable, flat driving, a spacious interior, and class-leading luggage capacity.
The powertrain options include hybrid and gasoline. The hybrid version combines a 1.8-liter "2ZR-FXE" gasoline engine (72kW/98ps at 5,200rpm, 142Nm at 3,600rpm) with a motor (53kW/72ps, 163Nm) using the THS II system with reduction gear, producing a total system output of 90kW (122ps). Fuel economy is rated at 4.3 L/100km (Thai specifications).
The gasoline version features a 1.8-liter "2ZR-FBE" engine (103kW/140ps at 6,000rpm, 177Nm) paired with a Super CVT-i transmission, achieving fuel economy of 6.5 L/100km. Both versions share a minimum turning radius of 5.2m and are front-wheel drive with seating for five.
Developed with the keyword "COROLLA MEETS SUV," the Corolla Cross is a new SUV designed to offer both a sense of presence (a powerful exterior) and utility (ease of use), exceeding customer expectations.
At the global premiere in Thailand, Chief Engineer Daizo Kamiyama commented, "The Corolla Cross is a 'new family member' of the Corolla, and we hope it becomes like family to our customers – sometimes a friend, sometimes a partner, sometimes a sibling. We wish to help customers create new stories with the Corolla Cross, carrying their loved ones, belongings, and their future."
