Powertrain Evolved, Aerodynamic Performance Enhanced in Exterior

The second-generation NSX was unveiled in August 2016. It inherits the concept of the first-generation model, "The Supersports Centered on People," and boasts Honda's flagship model, achieving a high level of response and handling performance that is difficult to attain with an engine alone, thanks to the adoption of Honda's unique electrification technology, the three-motor hybrid system "Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling-All Wheel Drive)."
The Type S, announced this time, is the culmination and final model of the second-generation NSX. It pursues performance beyond previous NSX models and features an evolved powertrain.
The powertrain combines a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo engine with a direct-drive motor directly connected to the crankshaft and a 9-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), along with a TMU (Twin Motor Unit) that drives the left and right front wheels independently with two motors. This setup improves the engine's combustion efficiency, and the adoption of a high-heat-resistant turbocharger enhances boost pressure and cooling, achieving further output increases.
Furthermore, the battery output and usable capacity of the IPU (Intelligent Power Unit) have been expanded, improving the overall system output and torque. To further enhance the exhilaration of driving and the sense of unity between the driver and the car, Honda has also introduced for the first time the tuning of the engine sound and a paddle-hold downshift function that allows for instantaneous downshifts to the appropriate gear during deceleration.
The body features a multi-material space frame centered on high-rigidity extruded aluminum materials, characterized by its light weight and high rigidity. Additionally, the all-aluminum independent suspension front and rear, along with the active damper system, achieve a balance of agile handling and high-speed stability.
The car is equipped with high-grip Type S-exclusive tires, 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear. The wider track achieved by the newly designed forged aluminum wheels enhances the ultimate performance and control during circuit driving.
The "Integrated Dynamics System," which allows selection of four driving modes optimized for different driving scenarios, has undergone revisions for the Type S, including control of the active damper system, EPS (Electric Power Steering), and hybrid drive force distribution. Honda claims this embodies the "joy of driving" unique to the Type S.
The exterior also incorporates a new design for the front and rear bumpers, while simultaneously pursuing improved aerodynamic performance.
The body is available in a total of 10 colors, including the new Carbon Matte Gray Metallic and Long Beach Blue Pearl. Worldwide production is limited to 350 units, with 30 units allocated for Japan. The price is 27.94 million yen.
