Nissan Unveils the All-New Crossover EV, the Nissan Ariya, in World Premiere
On July 15, Nissan held an online presentation for its new crossover EV, the Nissan Ariya. The new Ariya is the production version of the "Ariya Concept" unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Sales in Japan are scheduled for mid-2021, with an estimated actual selling price of around 5 million yen. The vehicle is also slated for release in Europe, North America, and China by the end of 2021.
Four Powertrain Options Available
The Ariya measures 4,595mm in length, 1,850mm in width, and 1,655mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,775mm, and the weight ranges from 1,900kg to 2,200kg depending on the model.
The exterior design embodies "Timeless Japanese Futurism" with a simple yet powerful and modern expression. Using the keywords "Sleek," "Chic," and "Seamless," the design conveys the advanced and connected technology of the Nissan Ariya.
Specifically, this includes the illuminated new Nissan brand logo at the center of the aerodynamically efficient shield-like front grille, slim LED headlights, a white illuminated V-motion grille, a low, flowing roofline, and smoke-tinted, horizontally oriented rear combination lamps.
The interior, on the other hand, is designed around the Japanese concept of "Ma" (間), signifying the space between things or the time between events. It aims to provide a simple and comfortable space, akin to being in a favorite lounge.
The dashboard features no physical switches; icons illuminate when the power is turned on. The wood-grain instrument panel incorporates 12.3-inch displays with haptic switches that vibrate to provide tactile feedback, ensuring operability even while driving.
Furthermore, the wide center console can be moved forward and backward electrically to match the driver's seating position. Above it sits a newly designed shift knob with "Advanced Ambient Lighting," and the center console houses a Qi-compatible wireless charger.
There are four EV powertrain options. In order of maximum output/torque, 0-100km/h acceleration, top speed, and driving range: the 2WD model with a 65kWh battery offers 160kW/300Nm, 7.5 seconds, 160km/h, and 450km. The 2WD model with a 90kWh battery provides 178kW/300Nm, 7.6 seconds, 160km/h, and 610km. The e-4ORCE (AWD) model with front and rear motors and a 65kWh battery delivers 250kW/560Nm, 5.4 seconds, 200km/h, and 430km. The e-4ORCE (AWD) model with a 90kWh battery outputs 290kW/600Nm, 5.1 seconds, 200km/h, and 580km. It also features the e-Pedal, which gained attention when introduced in the Leaf, enabling acceleration and deceleration with a single pedal.
Equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and Connected Technology
Masato Fukuda, Chief Product Specialist of the Product Planning Department, commented, "The intelligent power of the Nissan Ariya is one of the pillars defining Nissan's DNA. Much has been said about EVs, and the 0-100km/h acceleration time is often discussed. For an EV with high acceleration performance, good straight-line acceleration is a given. The true value of the Nissan Ariya lies in its ability to deliver maximum performance under various driving conditions, such as snowy mountain roads or wet city streets."
Charging supports up to 130kW rapid charging. A water-cooled thermal management system maintains a constant battery temperature, enabling a range of up to 375km on a 30-minute rapid charge. Nissan is also working on charging infrastructure development, planning to install up to 150kW CHAdeMO rapid chargers in publicly accessible locations in Japan by fiscal year 2021.
In terms of safety, the vehicle is equipped with Nissan's ProPILOT 2.0 advanced driver assistance system and ProPILOT Remote Parking. Advanced connected technology allows users to plan their route on their smartphone while having breakfast at home, then transfer the route information to the car. Before even getting in, the remote climate control can be activated, ensuring a comfortable temperature on hot or cold days. Additionally, it integrates Amazon Alexa, enabling voice control for music playback, weather checks, calls to family and friends, and control of smart home devices.
While driving, a large full-color head-up display projects essential information such as vehicle speed, route guidance, and ProPILOT status directly into the driver's line of sight, eliminating the need to shift focus. Furthermore, from the car, drivers can control home appliances like lights and air conditioning by speaking to Alexa on their way home.
Nissan's Ashwani Gupta, COO, stated, "The Nissan Ariya enhances the joy of driving, delivering a more comfortable and confident experience, and a greater sense of connection than ever before. It's not just a well-executed crossover EV; it is truly a 'Force of wonder.' The Nissan Ariya will soon be on the streets."
