The Fourth Generation Continental GT Debuts
Bentley announced the new "Continental GT Speed," the fourth generation of the Continental GT series, which was unveiled in Japan on August 27. This plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model marks a new chapter for the luxury grand tourer.
Equipped with the Newly Developed "Ultra Performance Hybrid" PHEV Unit
Since its founding in 1919, Bentley has continued to create fast, beautiful, and comfortable GT cars. The company has produced numerous masterpieces, including the Bentley "3 Litre" which debuted in 1921, the "Speed Six" (1926-1930), and the "R Type" (1952-1955).
Twenty-one years after the birth of the Continental GT, which carries on that legacy, the new PHEV-evolved model was publicly revealed in Japan for the first time. The convertible "Continental GTC Speed" was also launched simultaneously.
The powertrain features a completely new "Ultra Performance Hybrid" unit, combining a 4.0-liter V8 engine with a 190 ps electric motor, delivering a maximum output of 600 ps and peak torque of 800 Nm.
The system's total maximum output is 782 ps, a 19% increase from the current model's 659 ps, and peak torque is 1000 Nm, an 11% increase from the current 900 Nm. It is set to become Bentley's most powerful model ever. The car features an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission driving all four wheels, with a top speed of 335 km/h and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.2 seconds.
A 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is housed behind the rear axle, contributing to an optimized weight distribution of 49:51. The electric motor alone produces 190 ps and 450 Nm, enabling a range of 81 km on electric power alone according to EU drive cycle values.
The chassis has also been revamped to match the performance of the new powertrain. It incorporates the latest technologies, such as newly designed 2-chamber air springs and dual-valve dampers.
Additionally, features like Bentley Dynamic Ride (48V active anti-roll control) and torque vectoring are included, contributing to a comfortable ride.
The exterior is based on Bentley's new design DNA, established through the "Batur" and "Bacalar." The single headlight, a feature not seen on Bentley's flagship models since the 1950s, is a first for the Continental GT, marking a significant transformation.
The rear design has also been revised. The taillights feature a wider graphic and extend across the trunk lid. With minimal ornamentation, the rear presents a clean impression, complemented by 22-inch wheels.
Inside, a quilted pattern inspired by fashion has been incorporated. The optional wellness seats offer a configuration that minimizes fatigue.
Bentley's signature rotating display is carried over from the previous generation. It can present one of three surfaces: a 12.3-inch high-resolution display, analog gauges, or a hand-finished wood panel.
In terms of technology, the "My Bentley App Studio" is newly introduced. Apps related to the vehicle and third-party applications can be downloaded directly to the infotainment system. Apps for music, navigation, parking, and charging are designed to operate seamlessly on the infotainment interface.
The simultaneously launched convertible "Continental GTC Speed" features a 7-bow fabric roof system that can be opened or closed in 19 seconds while driving at speeds up to 48 km/h.
Despite being a convertible, it achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.4 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 285 km/h.
Both models are handcrafted at Bentley's Crewe headquarters in the UK, with production and deliveries scheduled to begin after July 2024.
