The limited edition GR Yaris, for which web reservations have already begun, has received approximately 6,000 orders in Japan and Europe. This time, as a follow-up domestic lineup, the company plans to release the high-output "RZ" model, the "RS" for casually enjoying refined driving, and the "RC" for competition use around September 2020.
The GR Yaris was born from the principle of "building a competitive car for the WRC," learned from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT (World Rally Team), and refined through evaluations by external professional drivers from the early stages of development. It was created to be a car that can be controlled as intended on any road in the world, "that anyone can drive with confidence and precision."
Specifically, the upper body utilizes aluminum for the engine hood, back door, and door panels, along with a carbon-fiber roof panel, creating a lightweight yet rigid three-door cabin.
The "RZ" combines a G16E-GTS 1.6-liter inline three-cylinder turbo engine producing a maximum output of 272 ps (200 kW) and a maximum torque of 370 Nm with a six-speed manual transmission and the GR-FOUR sports 4WD system. The "RZ High Performance," which features enhanced equipment, is further equipped with BBS forged aluminum wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and front and rear Torsen LSDs.
The "RS" is a front-wheel-drive model that combines an M15A-FKS 1.5-liter inline three-cylinder engine producing a maximum output of 120 ps (88 kW) and a maximum torque of 145 Nm with a Direct Shift-CVT (equipped with a 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic).
The "RC" is a lightweight model for competition use, equipped with the same powertrain as the RZ, with all non-essential elements removed to prioritize driving performance.
Pricing is undecided. Production will take place at a newly established dedicated GR FACTORY line within Toyota's Motomachi Plant, assembled by employees possessing "Takumi" craftsmanship.
