Diverse Powertrain Options Including PHEV and Mild Hybrid

The Passat, Volkswagen's bestseller, enters its ninth generation. This all-round model, suitable for everything from business to leisure, sees its station wagon variant, the Passat Variant, feature a 50mm longer wheelbase and a 50mm increase in rear seat legroom.
The new model is characterized by its diverse powertrain options, comprising three new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems, mild hybrid systems, and five turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines.
The foundation is the evolved modular "Transverse Matrix" (MQBevo). Leveraging the economies of scale, the two PHEV variants deliver a system output of 150 kW (204 PS) or 200 kW (272 PS) and can accommodate a 19.7 kWh battery. This allows for an electric-only range of approximately 100 km, enabling use as an electric vehicle for daily commutes.
Furthermore, charging capabilities have been enhanced; instead of the previous 3.6 kW, an 11 kW AC charger can now be used, reducing charging times and enabling rapid charging.
Meanwhile, the 48V mild-hybrid models produce 110 kW (150 PS). They convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, contributing to fuel efficiency during coasting or when the internal combustion engine is not active.
For internal combustion engines, two gasoline turbo engines producing 150 kW (204 PS) and 195 kW (265 PS) are available, along with three diesel turbo engines producing 90 kW (122 PS), 110 kW (150 PS), and 142 kW (193 PS).
All engines are paired with an automatic transmission. The 195 kW gasoline model and the 142 kW diesel model come standard with a four-wheel-drive system, while other models are front-wheel drive.
In terms of driving dynamics, the adaptive chassis control "DCC Pro" is available as an option. It employs a two-valve technology for the first time at Volkswagen, contributing to a balance of dynamism and comfort.
The interior has also been completely redesigned. Particularly striking is the large landscape display on the dashboard, which offers intuitive operation through the latest generation "Modular Infotainment Matrix."
Additionally, the Passat Variant is equipped with state-of-the-art assistance systems as options. Notably, the Park Assist system allows for parking and unparking from a parking space using a smartphone for remote operation.
Furthermore, with the "Park Assist Pro" featuring a memory function, the system can record and save the last 50 meters of travel upon request, enabling automatic entry and exit from parking spaces.
The new Passat is scheduled for release in early 2024.
