PHEV Leveraging the Strengths of a Compact Rotary Engine
At the Brussels Motor Show, which opened on January 13th, Mazda unveiled the "MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV," a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) that uses a rotary engine as a generator.

85km Range in EV Mode
The MX-30, which had its world premiere at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show in 2019 as Mazda's first mass-produced BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), was introduced in 2020 as a compact SUV. Mild hybrid models were also offered for some markets, making it a model that has led Mazda's electrification efforts.
Developed as a car that proposes a new relationship between people and cars, it features a sophisticated design, an open and airy interior space, natural interior materials, and unique freestyle doors that allow users to create a variety of ways to enjoy it with their own ideas.
The newly released MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV is described as a series plug-in hybrid model that expands the usability of the BEV while retaining the unique value of the MX-30. The system, which generates electricity with a dedicated engine and drives with a motor, is similar to Nissan's e-Power. Incidentally, it is capable of traveling 85 km in EV mode.
The car's most distinctive feature is the adoption of a rotary engine as a generator. The newly developed rotary engine for power generation takes advantage of the rotary engine's ability to achieve the required output performance in a compact size, and is mounted in the motor room, arranged coaxially with the high-output motor and generator. This compact electric drive unit, combined with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 50-liter fuel tank, is said to realize a unique series plug-in hybrid system.
Charging is compatible with both standard and rapid charging methods, and it also features a 1500W power supply function. Another characteristic is its excellent PHEV convenience, with three driving modes selectable according to the usage scenario: "EV Mode," "Normal Mode," and "Charge Mode."
Mazda MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV Edition R
The MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV also comes with a special edition model, the "Edition R." This edition features a black exterior and interior color scheme, with the roof sides accented by "Malone Rouge Metallic," a color that revives the roof color of the "R360 Coupe," Mazda's first passenger car. Additionally, the floor mats and seat headrests feature special designs such as badges and embossing that mimic the shape of a rotor.
