The "DS" - A Special Model Combining Originality and Innovation
Citroën has always forged its own path, creating captivating cars that defy convention. The DS19, unveiled at the 1955 Paris Salon, was hailed as "a decade ahead of its time" due to its remarkably avant-garde design.
The "DS3" was first presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. It is a three-door compact hatchback that boasts a striking design, a refined interior, compact dimensions, class-leading interior space, and "vehicle personalization" that allows owners to express their individuality.
It's important to note that the "DS" designation in the "DS3" model name is not a revival of the iconic 1955 model. Instead, it signifies a distinct line of special models, separate from Citroën's traditional lineup, that embody exceptional originality and innovation. These "DS" models will complement the established "C" series, forming Citroën's expanded model range.
A Style That Expresses the Driver's Individuality
Among the features of the "DS3," available in two types, Chic and Sport Chic, the aforementioned "vehicle personalization" is the most noteworthy. Customers can choose from seven body colors and combine them with four roof and door mirror colors. Alloy wheel options include four colors for the Chic and two for the Sport Chic. Inside, the dashboard can be specified in one of five colors, and there are five choices for the upholstery, including fabric and leather.
The dynamic styling is also captivating. Dedicated emblems adorn the front and rear, and "front LED lights" are positioned on either side of the grille. The "floating roof" effect, achieved by a black finish on the B-pillars, makes the roof appear to hover. Accents in chrome on elements like the door handles, door mirror bases, and exhaust tips enhance the powerful and sculpted design.
The interior design features a glossy, lustrous material for the dashboard panel, distinct from other Citroën models, exuding sophistication and luxury. While ensuring ample cabin space, the trunk offers a generous 285 liters (VDA standard). The 60/40 split-folding rear seats further enhance practicality.
Chic with an Inline-4 DOHC, Sport Chic with a Turbocharged Engine
Two engine options are available. The Chic model is equipped with a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter DOHC 16V engine, characterized by its smooth power delivery and responsive revving. This power unit produces 88 kW (120 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 160 Nm (16.3 kgm) of torque at 4,250 rpm, featuring excellent combustion efficiency thanks to its continuously variable valve timing and lift system across the entire rev range. It is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Sport Chic, a special order model, features a 1.6-liter DOHC 16V engine with a direct injection twin-scroll turbocharger. It delivers an impressive 115 kW (156 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 240 Nm (24.5 kgm) of torque from 1,400 to 3,500 rpm. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, it offers a more spirited driving experience.
The power steering system supports agile driving with an "active return function" that assists in returning the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position, an "active damping function" that maintains steering stability at high speeds or on unpaved roads, and a "lock limit control function" that mitigates shocks from the steering wheel during full lock maneuvers. These features significantly enhance steering feel. Both engines utilize a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension.
In terms of safety, the vehicle employs materials of varying strengths in appropriate locations to ensure a high level of crash safety. All models come standard with ESP (Electronic Stability Program), a 6-airbag system, rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, and automatic headlights. It has achieved the highest rating of 5 stars in the comprehensive evaluation of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
