Following theWorld Premierein February this year, we also reported on our test drive in Germany,Audi "S1" and "S1 Sportback"are now on sale in Japan.
The S1 and S1 Sportback are equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSI engine that produces a maximum output of 231 ps and a maximum torque of 370 Nm, all within a compact body less than 4 meters long. This significant power is delivered through a 6-speed manual transmission to Audi's unique quattro all-wheel-drive system, a standard feature even on the smallest S models.
Figures for the home market show 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.8 seconds for the S1 and 5.9 seconds for the S1 Sportback. Both boast a top speed of 250 km/h.
The suspension has been comprehensively revised, with changes to the pivot bearing position on the front and a move from the A1's torsion beam to a four-link setup at the rear. The brakes feature large 310mm discs at the front and 272mm discs at the rear for improved stopping power, and the tires are sized 225/35R18.
Additionally, the cars are equipped with Audi drive select, which allows for adjustments to engine response and variable shock absorber settings, and the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) has also been optimized specifically for the S1.
The price for the 3-door S1 is 4.1 million yen, and the 5-door S1 Sportback is 4.3 million yen. Both are available only with right-hand drive.
