First Model Variation of New MINI Arrives Swiftly
Last year,Tokyo Motor ShowandLos Angeles Motor Showmarked its firstpublic unveiling,a fact still fresh in our minds.the new MINIwas announced. In June, the first model variation, theMINI 5 Door, was announced, and sales in Japan have now been confirmed just four months later.
The MINI 5 Door features a 70mm longer wheelbase compared to the 3-door hatchback. The overall body is 165mm longer and 15mm taller, resulting in dimensions of 4,000mm in length, 1,725mm in width, and 1,445mm in height. This extension provides more space in the rear, with 40mm more legroom for rear passengers and a trunk capacity increased by 67 liters to 278 liters.
The initial models introduced are the Cooper and Cooper S variations. The higher-spec Cooper S is equipped with a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 141kW (192ps) and a peak torque of 280Nm. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it achieves a fuel economy of 16.4 km/l. The Cooper features a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo engine producing 100kW (136ps) and 220Nm of torque, also coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Its fuel efficiency is rated at 17.9 km/l under the JC08 cycle.
Both models meet the "FY2015 Fuel Economy Standards" and "2005 Emission Standards (75% Reduction Level, ★★★★ Low-Emission Vehicle)", qualifying them for eco-car tax reductions. This results in a 60% reduction in automobile acquisition tax and a 50% reduction in weight tax.
The equipment also aligns with the new MINI, offering the latest technology such as forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, active cruise control, head-up display, parking assist, and a rearview camera.
In Japan, the prices including consumption tax are ¥2.98 million for the Cooper and ¥3.50 million for the Cooper S. Both are available only with a right-hand drive and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Sales begin today (October 2nd), with an Asian premiere event at Fuji Speedway this Saturday, followed by debut events at dealerships nationwide in early November.
