Mercedes-Benz Japan has introduced the "GLA 180," a gasoline-powered entry-level model for its compact SUV, the "GLA." Orders have begun.

The GLA, born in 2014 and fully redesigned into its second generation in 2020, now welcomes a gasoline-powered entry-level model.

The "GLA 180" is equipped with the "M282," an all-aluminum 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline turbo engine. The turbocharger features an electronically controlled wastegate, allowing for flexible boost pressure control that enables optimal boost even in low-load conditions.

Another technical highlight is the delta-shaped cylinder head, which, while taller than a conventional cylinder head, is narrower and contributes to weight reduction. Additionally, integrating the intake and exhaust manifolds into a semi-一体型 (semi-integrated unit) allowed for a more compact design, offering further benefits.

The design also leverages Daimler's patented technology for space-saving placement of a high-pressure injection pump operating at a maximum pressure of 250 bar. A multi-hole injection nozzle is positioned at the center of the combustion chamber, directing fuel spray towards the valves.

This high-compression ratio four-cylinder engine has been developed to reduce noise. It incorporates a Helmholtz resonator in the intake duct, a sound-insulating seal on the catalytic converter, and a cover designed to further minimize noise.

The "GLA 180" is priced at 4.95 million yen, with deliveries scheduled to begin in May 2021. Mercedes-Benz Japan also announced that the price of the "GLA 200 d 4MATIC" will increase by 150,000 yen from June, to 5.18 million yen.

Other models include the "Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC" with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine, priced at 7.02 million yen, and the "Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 4MATIC+" at 8.95 million yen.
