BMW Announces New R18 Equipped with the Most Powerful Boxer Engine in History
On May 14, BMW announced that it would begin accepting orders for the "R18," its flagship model in the cruiser segment, which combines classic design with modern technology. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Features the Most Powerful Two-Cylinder Boxer Engine in Production Motorcycle History
The new BMW R18 is a premium cruiser with roots in history, drawing inspiration from classic models like the R5 during its design phase. It boasts a double-loop steel tube frame and a nickel-plated universal shaft drive, exuding a captivating beauty.
The newly developed air-cooled, horizontally opposed two-cylinder "Big Boxer" engine displaces 1,802cc, producing a maximum output of 67kW (91hp) at 4,750rpm and over 150Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. It is the most powerful two-cylinder boxer engine in production motorcycle history, offering excellent pulling power and a deep engine sound.
It comes standard with three riding modes – "Rain," "Roll," and "Rock" – a rare feature for a cruiser. Additionally, safety is enhanced with Automatic Stability Control (ASC, deactivatable) and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR).
The First Edition also comes standard with a reverse assist for easy maneuvering and hill start control for effortless hill starts.
A distinctive feature of the R18 is its design, which facilitates customization. This is evident in the easily removable rear frame, brake and clutch hydraulic lines and wire harnesses that can accommodate higher or lower handlebars, and cylinder head covers and belt covers located outside the oil chamber.
The price is 2,547,000 yen. Additionally, the R18 First Edition, featuring a classic black finish with white pinstripes, will be available as a limited-time introductory model for 2,976,500 yen.
