Special Color Inspired by Lake Maggiore
In 1937, amidst a continuous exchange of record-breaking attempts between Britain and America for the world's fastest speed on water, Sir Malcolm Campbell of Britain set a record of 208.4 km/h with the "Blue Bird K3," a racing powerboat equipped with a Rolls-Royce R-type engine, shattering the world water speed record held by America for five years. The "Phantom Drophead Coupe Water Speed Collection" was born to commemorate this achievement.
The base for this model is the "Phantom" Drophead Coupe, which has a 250mm shorter wheelbase than the saloon version and was created for owners to enjoy driving themselves. Its 6.75-liter engine delivers a maximum output of 460 ps (338 kW) at 5,350 rpm and a peak torque of 720 Nm at 3,500 rpm.
Just as the powerboats that challenged for world speed records employed the latest technology of their time, the "Water Speed Collection" is finished using only the finest materials. The body color, "Maggiore Blue," specially formulated to complement the hairline-finished steel, is inspired by Lake Maggiore on the border of Italy and Switzerland, where the Bluebird K3 set its world record. Furthermore, it is adorned with intricate marquetry by Rolls-Royce's skilled artisans, evoking the sensation of a boat gliding across the water.
Following the design sketches revealed today, Rolls-Royce will introduce the detailed story behind the creation of the Water Speed Collection over the coming months. Additionally, models released by the company in 2014 will include other bespoke models, which will be announced sequentially.
