Audi Japan has added the "40 TDI quattro," equipped with a 2-liter TDI diesel turbo engine, to the "A6" and "A7 Sportback." Sales have commenced.

The Audi A6 and A7 Sportback, initially launched in Japan with a 3-liter V6 direct-injection turbo engine, now welcome the addition of newly developed 2-liter TFSI diesel turbo engine models.

The engine complies with the latest emission standards, producing a maximum output of 150kW (204ps) and a peak torque of 400Nm. By combining it with a 12V mild hybrid system, both acceleration and environmental performance are enhanced.

The 12V mild hybrid system includes a lithium-ion battery in addition to the conventional battery for the electrical system. With the assistance of this second battery, the system enables coasting with the engine off within the range of 55-160 km/h, and also features an engine assist function (up to 2kW, 60Nm for 5 seconds) during idling stop below 22 km/h.

Due to the larger Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) compared to a conventional starter motor, engine start-stop transitions are smooth, reportedly achieving a 3% improvement in fuel efficiency based on European measurements.

The TDI engine, lightened through the use of an aluminum cylinder block and pistons, achieves precise injection control with newly developed 8-hole solenoid injectors that offer response comparable to conventional piezo injectors, based on a fuel injection pressure of 2200 bar. By injecting fuel a total of 5 to 8 times per stroke depending on the situation, it contributes to high environmental performance, low vibration, and quietness.

The "40 TDI quattro" models of the A6 and A7 Sportback drive all four wheels through a quattro system utilizing an AWD clutch, paired with the 2-liter TFSI diesel turbo engine and a 7-speed S tronic transmission.

The price for the A6 equipped with the 2-liter TFSI diesel turbo engine is 7.45 million yen for the sedan, 7.92 million yen for the S edition, 7.81 million yen for the Avant station wagon, and 8.28 million yen for the S edition. The A7 Sportback is priced at 8.12 million yen.
