Arriving Next Spring. Price Also Announced.

The production model of Audi's first plug-in hybrid for mass production, the Audi "A3 Sportback e-tron," was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. While the vehicle specifications are the same as those announced at the Geneva Motor Show 2013, Audi has now officially announced that deliveries of the production model will begin in spring 2014, with a German sales price of around 37,000 euros.Geneva Motor Show 2013as announced at the Geneva Motor Show 2013, but Audi has now officially announced that deliveries of the production model will begin in spring 2014, with a German sales price of around 37,000 euros.

The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is equipped with a 1.4-liter TFSI engine producing 110 kW (150 hp), a 75 kW electric motor, and lithium-ion batteries. The total system output is 150 kW (204 hp), with a maximum torque of 350 Nm (35.6 kgm).

This powertrain delivers a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 222 km/h. Despite this performance, the average fuel consumption reaches 66.6 km per liter. This means it can travel 100 km on just 1.5 liters of gasoline, with CO2 emissions kept to 35 g/km.

In EV mode, it can travel 50 km with zero emissions. The aforementioned 66.6 km/liter figure naturally includes driving in EV mode. The total driving range of the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, thanks to this excellent fuel efficiency, is an impressive 940 km.

This is comprised of 890 km as a gasoline hybrid and an additional 50 km in pure EV mode. Incidentally, the plug-in hybrid system can be fully charged in under 2.5 hours using a 16A outlet.

Despite the installation of a hybrid system including lithium-ion batteries and motors, the vehicle weight is kept to 1,580 kg. The powertrain is compactly designed, and Audi explains that it offers practicality with seating for five adults and a luggage space comparable to the A3 5-door model. The A3 models equipped with gasoline or diesel engines can be distinguished from the plug-in hybrid by the presence of a charging port next to the "Four Rings" emblem on the front.

Through its proactive electrification, including plug-in hybrids, Audi is emphasizing its advanced technology and aiming to stand out from other premium brands in sustainable mobility. This truly embodies the brand's tagline, "Vorsprung durch Technik" (Advancement through Technology). This poses a significant threat to Japanese manufacturers who have been leading in hybrid technology.
