+30ps, -18 Percent
The new "Golf R" is the most powerful model based on the Golf 7, developed by the motorsport division Volkswagen R GmbH. While the engine is the same inline 4-cylinder 2-liter turbo as the predecessor, the maximum output has increased by 30ps to 300ps (221kW). Acceleration from 0-100km/h is 5.1 seconds for the 6-speed manual model, and 4.9 seconds for the optional 6-speed DSG, with a top speed electronically limited to 250km/h.
While improving power performance, like other Golf models, it incorporates features such as an idling stop mechanism and brake energy recovery system to enhance fuel efficiency. The figures are 7.1L/100km (approximately 14.1km/L) for the manual model and 6.9L/100km (approximately 14.5km/L) for the DSG model, representing an 18 percent improvement (DSG model) compared to the previous generation. CO2 emissions are also reduced, stated as 165g/km for the manual and 159g/km for the DSG.
The drivetrain uses the latest fifth-generation Haldex coupling for the new 4MOTION system. Torque distribution is automatically managed as needed; it cuts the link to the rear axle under low load to improve fuel economy, while capable of transmitting nearly 100 percent of torque to the rear.
It comes standard with Electronic Differential Lock (EDS) and XDS+ which lightly brakes the inner wheel during cornering to improve handling. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system includes an "ESC Sport" mode that delays intervention for sporty driving, such as on a circuit. Furthermore, a mode that completely deactivates ESC, exclusive to the R, can be activated by holding the button for over three seconds.
The suspension features sports suspension, lowered by 20mm compared to the standard model and 5mm lower than the GTI. Tire size is 225/40 on 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 19-inch wheels available as an option. Ventilated discs are used for all four brakes, with black calipers featuring "R" logos.
Exterior features include custom bumpers, side sills, and alloy wheels. Bi-xenon headlights, newly designed LED daytime running lights, dark red LED rear lights, and dual exhaust pipes are standard. The interior is also sportily appointed, with combination sport seats in fabric and Alcantara, a leather 3-spoke steering wheel, and ambient lighting.
The new Golf R will be available in 2-door and 4-door versions, with deliveries commencing in the fourth quarter of this year. Pricing starts from 38,325 Euros (just under 5 million Japanese Yen).
