The Potential of EcoBoost Revealed
For gasoline-powered vehicles, the 100g/km CO2 emissions mark had stood as a significant hurdle for manufacturers. The Ford Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost is the landmark model that has finally overcome it.
The newly adopted 1-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine in the Focus is a marvel of high technology, balancing ample power of 100ps with environmental performance. While it's often said that increasing displacement or using forced induction can easily boost power, achieving better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions requires a complex integration of various advanced technologies.
The Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost employs a range of Ford's ECOnetic technologies, including weight reduction, low rolling resistance tires, a body design with optimized aerodynamics, and a transmission with carefully selected gear ratios.
Examples of these ECOnetic technologies include the Auto Start/Stop system, Smart Regenerative Charging, Active Grille Shutter, and Ford EcoMode, which supports more economical and eco-friendly driving by displaying leaf icons.
This results in CO2 emissions of 99g/km, earning the Focus the distinction of being the first mass-produced gasoline model in Europe to achieve under 100g/km of CO2 emissions, as mentioned earlier.
The fuel economy of the Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost is 4.3 L/100km (67.5 mpg), naturally achieving class-leading efficiency. In Japanese terms, this means it can travel approximately 23.2 km per litre.
In addition to low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions, this engine offers tax benefits. In the UK, it exempts new car buyers from vehicle excise duty, and in France, it provides a €200 discount on new vehicle registration tax.
The Ford Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost is scheduled for release in Europe early next year. Concurrently, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will be expanded to the compact SUV EcoSport, commercial vehicles like the Transit Connect and Transit Courier, and is also planned for the new D-segment sedan, the Mondeo. This demonstrates that engine downsizing is becoming a significant movement.
