Mutual Benefits in Development Speed and Procurement

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have revealed a collaboration on the development of next-generation EV powertrains. While both companies operate across the UK and Germany, they share a common vision for advanced electrification technology with minimal environmental impact, leading to this partnership.

In their collaboration, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW highlight the increasing importance of "ACES" in recent years: Autonomous, Connectivity, Electrification, and Shared Services. They state that a swift response to electrification, particularly given its rapid technological advancements, is fundamental to addressing these areas.

BMW has been producing the compact electric model " i3" since 2013, while Jaguar Land Rover introduced the electric SUV " I-PACE" to the market in 2018. By pooling the knowledge gained from these experiences, the companies aim to achieve significant scale benefits through joint research and development, manufacturing plans, and joint procurement within their supply chains.

Jaguar Land Rover plans to manufacture its next-generation EDU (Electric Drive Unit) at the Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, UK, which became its global manufacturing hub in January. This aligns with BMW's fifth-generation electric unit, which will be featured in BMW's new electric SUV, the "iX3."

BMW also emphasizes the importance of developing new technologies to meet diverse global customer needs and legal requirements. They stress that this collaboration does not mean a sole focus on electrification; the BMW Group will continue its research into traditional internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cells.

Jaguar Land Rover has stated that all new models from 2020 onwards will include electrified options such as EVs, PHEVs, and MHEVs, while also continuing to offer gasoline and diesel engines.
