This year, marking the company's 100th anniversary, Aston Martin unveiled and showcased a racing car based on the facelifted 2014 "Rapide S" at the Geneva Motor Show. This car is capable of running on both hydrogen and gasoline.
Dubbed the "Hydrogen Hybrid Rapide S," this racing car is being developed with the intention of competing in the "ADAC Zurich 24h Race (Nürburgring 24h Endurance Race)" held in May. It is powered by a 6-liter V12 twin-turbo engine mounted at the front, driving the rear wheels.
In addition to the conventional gasoline tank, four highly durable carbon fiber hydrogen tanks are installed: two beside the driver's seat and two in the trunk. These tanks store a total of 3.5 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bar. This is reportedly enough hydrogen to complete one lap of the Nürburgring's North Course at racing speed using only hydrogen fuel.
There are three modes: gasoline-only, hydrogen-only, and a blend of both. The management system automatically selects the mode based on the situation. Naturally, using only hydrogen results in zero CO2 emissions, and blending gasoline with hydrogen can significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Welcoming the debut of this hydrogen hybrid Rapide S, Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, stated the following:
"This year, as we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we reflect on a century filled with excitement, innovation, and style. This milestone year is also a fitting time to look towards the future with this remarkable racing car."
"The unveiling of this incredible new technology, developed with Alset Global, in the demanding environment of a 24-hour endurance race is intended to demonstrate the car's reliability and the high level of skill of our team, who have already set a record for completing a lap of the Nürburgring with zero emissions."
We look forward to the performance of the Hydrogen Hybrid Rapide S at the Nürburgring this May.
