A Premium Sedan with a Two-Motor Hybrid System

The new Insight prototype, making its world debut, is the third generation of the HV-exclusive model, dating back to the first generation launched in the U.S. in 1999 as Honda's first hybrid model. It features a spacious five-seater cabin within a sedan form, developed as a premium compact sedan positioned above the currently strong-selling Civic in Honda's passenger car lineup.

The new Insight's exterior is characterized by a stylish design emphasized by the signature "Flying Wing" grille of the latest Honda models, bold slim LED headlights, dynamic character lines flowing into the taillights, and a long, coupe-like roofline.

The interior, leveraging a long wheelbase, offers seating for five and is equipped with a 7-inch digital LCD driver's meter, an 8-inch touchscreen display, and leather seats. By placing the battery pack under the rear seats, it was possible to include 60:40 split-folding rear seats and a full-size trunk.

The powertrain features the third-generation Honda two-motor HV system, "SPORT HYBRID i-MMD," which combines a highly efficient 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine, a powerful electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack. According to Honda, the Insight can operate on electric power alone in most situations, with the engine acting as a generator. This configuration achieves powerful yet refined driving performance and high fuel efficiency.

The new Insight, equipped with the advanced safety and driver-assist system "HONDA SENSING," will be produced at Honda's Greensburg, Indiana plant and is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in the summer of 2018.
