Audi A6 Hybrid Launched: Audi Japan's First Hybrid Model

AudiAudi Japan has announced and begun sales of the "Audi A6 Hybrid," the first hybrid vehicle under the Audi brand in Japan.

The A6 Lineup Complete!

In addition to the standard sedan model, the "Audi A6" lineup also includes the more special and sporty "S6", the highly functional station wagon "A6 Avant", and the "A6 allroad quattro" which further enhances the off-road capability of the A6 Avant. The Audi A6 hybrid has now joined this impressive A6 family as the first hybrid model under the Audi brand in Japan.

The fundamental characteristics, including the lightweight body based on "Audi ultra", which defines the current "Audi A6," are shared with the regular "A6."

Meanwhile, the engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with a maximum output of 155 kW (211 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. Its performance is identical to the engine found in the "Audi A4" and "Audi Q3." Positioned behind this engine is an electric motor with an output of 40 kW and 210 Nm of torque. The combined system delivers a maximum output of 180 kW (245 hp) and a maximum torque of 480 Nm. This performance is not only comparable to other A6 models equipped with V6 engines but even surpasses them in some aspects.

The transmission is an 8-speed Tiptronic. Instead of a torque converter, a hybrid unit integrating the electric motor and a clutch drives the front wheels, making it a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

A lithium-ion battery is mounted above the rear axle. While positioned in a location less susceptible to impact during a collision to maintain safety and minimize weight, the trunk capacity is reduced to 375 liters from the usual 530 liters.

In addition to selection via "Audi drive select," the EV mode can be chosen from a button on the center console, allowing for electric-only driving for up to 3 km at speeds of 60 km/h. Furthermore, the electric motor functions as a booster during acceleration, supplementing the engine. The powerful acceleration is achieved through the substantial torque generated by the combination of the turbocharged engine and the electric motor.

Fuel economy in the JC08 mode is 13.8 km/l. It is eligible for eco-car tax reductions, with 100% exemption from income tax and weight tax, and a 50% exemption from automobile tax.

Standard features include a "hybrid" badge, a two-way glass sunroof, specially designed 18-inch alloy wheels (tire size 245/45 R18), and LED headlights, with a price of 6.9 million yen.

Audi Japan is targeting environmentally conscious adults. Citing a strong demand for hybrid models in Japan, the company plans to introduce a model with a similar front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain for its flagship model, the "A8" next year. Additionally, a hybrid model with quattro all-wheel drive is expected to be launched for the minor change model of the "Q5" also next year.
