Tesla: Accelerating the World's Transition to Sustainable Energy

Founded in 2003 in Silicon Valley, America, Tesla was established with the desire to prove that electric cars could surpass gasoline-powered vehicles. "Tesla's electric cars boast instant torque, immense power, and zero emissions, and are manufactured with the goal of being the safest cars in the world," stated Nicolas Villeger, President of Tesla Motors Japan.

Furthermore, "By offering stylish, fun-to-drive cars that match the user's lifestyle, we aim to achieve our company mission: 'Accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.'"

Regarding Tesla's reasons for developing electric vehicles, Villeger explained, "Petroleum is still necessary for transportation by cars and buses, and for logistics such as trucks. However, it is also clear that petroleum will eventually be depleted. Therefore, we must transition from a society dependent on petroleum to one powered by renewable energy. For a sustainable future, shouldn't we first make our most familiar mode of transport, the car, one that doesn't require gasoline?"

He also emphasized the importance of electric vehicles as a solution to global warming and air pollution. "According to 2013 data, deaths caused by air pollution were 290,000, making it the fourth leading cause of death, surpassing traffic accidents. Furthermore, 87 percent of the world's population is exposed to PM2.5 level air pollution. In Japan, air pollution from sources like PM2.5 is also a concern. Electric vehicles offer the most efficient and quickest way to solve this problem, leading to a healthier and sustainable automotive society," he stated.

Tesla and SUVs

Tesla's entry into the SUV market this time is driven by the significant expansion of this segment. "The SUV market is the fastest-growing category in Japan as well," Villeger noted, adding, "This new product is crucial for Tesla's business strategy."

SUVs are popular not only among car enthusiasts but also with families and female drivers. By appealing to this broad demographic, Tesla hopes to accelerate the shift to an EV society, aligning with their mission. "In addition to our existing sedan models, we aim to compete in the SUV segment as well," he stated.

The Model X will be available in 3-row 6-seater and 7-seater configurations, with a 2-row 5-seater option to be added in the future. All models feature dual-motor AWD, with four battery sizes ranging from 60kWh to 100kWh. The cruising range is 355km for the 60kWh version and up to 542km for the 100kWh version.

Performance figures range from 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h for the 60kWh model, to 3.1 seconds and 250 km/h for the 100kWh model. System output ranges from 422 hp to 539 hp.

Spreading Its Wings Like a Falcon

Key features of the Model X include keyless entry, Falcon Wing Doors, and an all-glass panoramic windshield.

The keyless entry system automatically unlocks the doors as you approach the car and closes them when you step inside and press the brake pedal. These settings can be adjusted via the 17-inch touchscreen inside the cabin, and can also be turned off.

Unlike conventional front-hinged doors, the Falcon Wing Doors utilize double hinges on the roof, allowing them to open and close with as little as 30cm of clearance on either side. Villeger stated, "This offers unprecedented convenience, accessibility, and ease of use. They open in a smaller space than the sliding doors of a minivan, making it easy to put children in the back seat even in tight parking spaces." The doors are equipped with safety sensors, preventing injury if a child reaches out or gets too close.

The all-glass panoramic windshield is a feature made possible by the SUV form factor. Villeger commented, "Because it's an SUV, people will feel inspired to take their families on long drives, and this large windshield will be greatly appreciated." From the outside, it appears as a single, large panel extending to the middle of the roof without any obstructing elements, allowing everyone to enjoy the view from any seat. Villeger added, "Looking up from inside the cabin, the sky extends overhead, which is quite astonishing."

Additionally, the rear cargo space offers 2,180 liters (6-seater configuration), with an additional 187 liters of storage in the front trunk.

Immune to Biological Threats

The platform is proprietary to Tesla, with the battery integrated into the floor, resulting in an extremely low center of gravity. This not only enhances handling but also reduces the risk of rollovers. Furthermore, the absence of an engine allows for a longer crumple zone compared to other SUVs in the event of a frontal collision, another advantage of EVs.

A unique feature is the industry-first medical-grade HEPA air filtration system. As explained, "Regardless of external conditions, the cabin can be filled with air as clean as an operating room." This system boasts capabilities far beyond standard air conditioning filters, removing bacteria 300 times more effectively, allergens 500 times more effectively, and soot and smoke 700 times more effectively.

Its most distinctive feature is the "Bioweapon Defense Mode." Villeger explained, "This is a positive-pressure system designed to protect occupants from biological threats. In everyday situations, it can combat pollen allergies, as well as surrounding odors and exhaust fumes, and the increasing prevalence of children's allergies. With this button, it's possible to create a completely clean interior environment."

Always Up-to-Date with Software Updates

Like the Model S sedan, the Model X is also capable of software updates, allowing for the addition of new features. Naturally, even after delivery, new functionalities can be accessed by downloading software updates.

The vehicle will transition from its current 3G connection to a future 4G LTE system. This will enhance the speed of all functions, including navigation and internet radio, providing significant benefits to users and serving as a crucial innovation for operating the 17-inch panel.

Currently, vehicles reserved are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2017 or later.
