Production Scheduled to Begin in 2017
Volvo's reveal included concept cars for the compact segment that will later appear as the 40 Series, such as the "V40," "V40 Cross Country," and "S40." These concepts were presented in two styling variations: a sedan and an SUV.
The platform utilizes Volvo's newly developed "CMA (Compact Modular Architecture)" system for small cars, marking its first application. This is said to dramatically enhance flexibility in powertrains and styling.
In addition to gasoline and diesel options, the powertrain is also planned to include pure EV and plug-in hybrid configurations. The PHV is a modified version of the "XC90" powertrain, adapted for smaller, front-wheel-drive applications and called the "T5 Twin Engine."T8 Twin Engine" powertrain, adapted for smaller, front-wheel-drive applications and called the "T5 Twin Engine."
Volvo is advancing the adoption of electric powertrains, setting a goal of one million cumulative sales by 2025. To achieve this, the company plans to introduce EV and PHV models within the new 40 Series, which will form the core of its sales. Production for this new 40 Series is scheduled to commence as early as 2017.
