Two Engine Types, Three Variations: V6 and Inline-4
Jaguar has announced two new engine types that will replace its existing engines. One is a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine. Following in the lineage of the current V8 engine, it inherits features such as direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and an aluminum cylinder head, while incorporating a Roots-type twin-vortex supercharger between the banks. It boasts a maximum output of 340ps and a maximum torque of 450Nm.
Furthermore, a high-power version of this V6 engine, tuned to produce a maximum output of 380ps and a maximum torque of 460Nm, is planned for exclusive use in the "F-TYPE," which is currently under development.
The other is an inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, known as the "2.0 I4 Ti 240." This will replace the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine currently found in the "XF" and "XJ." Despite its 2.0-liter displacement, it is a powerful engine, producing 240ps at 5,500 rpm. In addition to direct fuel injection and variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, it features special coatings on the piston rings and tappets to reduce friction.
These new engines will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which is currently only available in diesel models not introduced in Japan. The V6 supercharged engines will also feature the "Intelligent Stop-Start" system to improve fuel efficiency.
This change aligns with the trend among European automakers to downsize engines and increase transmission speeds as part of their environmental initiatives aimed at improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions. These new engines will be fitted to the 2013 models of the "XJ" and "XF."
