A New Choice in the Compact SUV Market

At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show,World PremiereJeep's new compact model, the "Renegade," which made its world premiere, is finally set to land in Japan.

As reported by Tatsuya KUSHIMA in hisOverseas Test Drive Report, the Renegade is Jeep's first compact SUV, with a body measuring 4,260mm in length, 1,805mm in width, and 1,695mm in height. This model was jointly developed through the merger of Chrysler and Fiat, who operate the Jeep brand. It shares many technologies, including the chassis and engines, with the Fiat "500X," for which domestic introduction has also been previewed.the "500X"is scheduled for domestic introduction this autumn.

The Renegade arriving in Japan will be the front-wheel-drive "Limited" model, equipped with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine. It will be paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Furthermore, according to a special website, an "Opening Edition" introductory special model based on the Limited will also be prepared.

The on-demand four-wheel-drive "Trailhawk" model will have a 30mm higher overall height and feature a My Sky open-air roof. Its powertrain will combine a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder Tigershark MultiAir2 engine with Jeep's first 9-speed automatic transmission.

While detailed specifications and pricing for the domestic market will be revealed this autumn, the successive introduction of new models like the Renegade and 500X by FCA Japan is expected to add another option to the distinctive compact SUV market.
