A New Icon Symbolizing 50 Years of History

Aston Martin unveiled the V12 Zagato, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the DB 4 GT Zagato, at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. The car is also scheduled to compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race on June 25-26.

This collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato, which has produced numerous masterpieces such as the DB 4 GT Zagato, V8 Vantage Zagato, and DB 7 Zagato, marks the 50th anniversary of the original DB 4 GT Zagato with the creation of the "V12 Zagato" in the commemorative year of 2011.

As Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez stated, "The V12 Zagato, symbolizing 50 years of history cultivated by Aston Martin and Zagato, has the potential to become a new icon among cars worldwide." The vehicle features an exterior that, while firmly rooted in Aston Martin's design language, is further enhanced with Zagato's essence, imbuing it with a more emotional aesthetic.

Development of the V12 Zagato began with discussions between Aston Martin and Zagato in 2010, merging their respective design DNA. The design process started with the latest computer technology, followed by fine-tuning with traditional clay models. The aluminum body panels were handcrafted by artisans employing techniques honed over nearly 100 years of tradition.

Design Director Marek Reichman commented, "The V12 Zagato possesses a design that hints at the ferocity of a racing car within its elegance. Just as the DB 4 GT Zagato was a symbol of grace and power, the muscular form of the V12 Zagato will serve as a testament to its Thoroughbred status in the racing world."

The powertrain features a 6.0-liter V12 engine, delivering a high performance of 380 kW (517 ps) and 570 Nm of torque. This surpasses the new Virage, which produces a maximum output of 365 kW (497 ps).

The DB 4 GT Zagato, of which only 19 units were produced, saw its first two cars, delivered at its 1960 launch, used for racing by Jim Clark and Roy Salvadori. Following a similar destiny, the first two V12 Zagatos have also been designated for racing. The car will debut in the Nürburgring VLN race starting May 28th, followed by participation in the 24-hour endurance race on June 25-26. Further weight reduction and suspension tuning are planned in preparation for this race.

Furthermore, the V12 Zagato received the Best Design Award in the Concept Cars & Prototypes category at the "Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este," held on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. In response, Reichman expressed his delight, stating, "To receive this award in Italy, a country that has produced so many beautiful designs, is a great honor. It is proof that the design we have painstakingly developed has succeeded."
