TOYOTA: A History of Reconstruction Support

Past Reconstruction Support Activities
Approximately 80 days have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Today, as the damage continues to diversify—not only in the affected areas but also due to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and the resulting reputational damage—there is a need for continuous and meticulous support. Toyota Motor Corporation has been providing both material and financial support since immediately after the disaster.

Supplying 87 Units of 11-Ton Trucks' Worth of Supplies and Approximately 250 Vehicles
As has already been reported, Toyota has contributed a total of 300 million yen as a company. This was donated to organizations such as the Central Community Chest of Japan and Japan Platform. Furthermore, an additional 55 million yen was donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society through the goodwill of executives and employees.
Immediately after the earthquake, fuel such as kerosene was delivered to the affected areas, and seven water tanker trucks were dispatched to provide water supply, an activity that continues to this day. Support supplies, including those gathered from Toyota dealerships nationwide, totaling 87 units of 11-ton trucks—comprising food, beverages, daily necessities, pharmaceuticals, and recovery supplies—have been provided. Approximately 60 employees were also dispatched to the sites to assist with the distribution of these supplies.
Given that many vehicles were swept away by the tsunami or damaged by the earthquake, approximately 250 vehicles have been provided to four prefectures—Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Ibaraki—contributing to administrative operations that remain challenging. For those who lost their homes in the affected areas or were forced to evacuate due to the nuclear power plant accident, 160 company housing units and 320 dormitory rooms have been provided through Aichi Prefecture for collective evacuation.
“In-House Marche” Featuring Ingredients from the Tohoku and Kanto Regions
As support for reputational damage related to the nuclear accident, menus using ingredients from the Tohoku and Kanto regions are being offered in the employee cafeterias at the head office and the Tokyo head office. At the Tokyo head office, a product sales event called “In-House Marche” is held to sell agricultural products and processed goods from the Tohoku and Kanto regions. By selling processed foods from the affected areas in the company stores at both the head office and the Tokyo head office, Toyota is supporting the disaster-stricken regions and actively working to alleviate reputational damage.
Moving forward, from June, reconstruction support activities will be carried out by employee volunteers from 15 Toyota Group companies and affiliated firms. The operational base will be set up in Sumita Town, Iwate Prefecture, and until the end of July, approximately 50 people, divided into five groups, will regularly visit Rikuzentakata City, which suffered extensive damage. They will engage in tasks such as debris removal, waste disposal, and clearing mud from drainage ditches, dedicating their efforts to the recovery.
