Seeking Testers for Demonstration Project


BMW is recruiting 14 participants for the second phase of its demonstration project for the electric vehicle "MINI E" in Japan. The participation period for the experiment will be from September 2011 to January 2012.

Second Phase to be Conducted in Osaka Area as Well as Tokyo Vicinity


The MINI E is a two-seater electric vehicle developed for everyday use by individual drivers. It features a high-performance lithium-ion battery and a motor that delivers a maximum output of 150kW (204ps) and a peak torque of 220Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 152 km/h. Despite being an electric vehicle, it is designed to exhibit the characteristic MINI agility and exceptional handling. The maximum cruising range on a single charge is approximately 240 km. Charging can be done using a standard household outlet.

Demonstration projects for the MINI E have previously been rolled out in the United States starting in 2009, followed by the UK and Germany. In Japan, in partnership with Waseda University and others,BMWis conducting demonstration experiments. Furthermore, as part of the first phase of the demonstration project, 14 general users living in the Tokyo vicinity participated from March to July 2010. The results were analyzed in Germany and shared with government agencies and various research institutions in Japan. Following further analysis, this data is intended for use in the research and development of next-generation automobiles.

In the second phase of the demonstration project, users will pay a monthly usage fee of 60,000 yen to use the MINI E for their daily transportation. This time, the experiment will be conducted not only in the Tokyo vicinity but also in the Osaka vicinity. A total of 14 people are being recruited: seven individuals living in the Tokyo vicinity and seven individuals living in the Osaka vicinity.

Applications will be accepted via the website until Sunday, June 19. The demonstration experiment will run from Thursday, September 1, 2011, to Tuesday, January 31, 2012.
