Fiat Unveils Coupe Version of 500
At the Geneva Motor Show, Fiat unveiled the 500 Coupe Zagato concept, a concept car designed in collaboration with Zagato and Fiat's Centro Stile (design center).
By Dai Matsuo
In the 1950s, Carrozzeria Zagato produced models such as the Fiat Abarth 500 Coupe Zagato and 750 Coupe Zagato, based on the Fiat Nuova 500 and 600. While those models were extensively modified, to the point of being unrecognizable from their base vehicles, and featured distinctive streamlined bodies, the "500 Coupe Zagato" that has been revived after more than 50 years retains the silhouette of the base Fiat 500 while achieving a design befitting the name "coupe."
The roofline slopes towards the rear, and the miniaturized rear window create a 2+2 configuration. However, by adopting the signature Zagato double-hump design, it appears that a reasonable amount of interior headroom has been achieved while lowering the vehicle's height.
Unlike the Mini, which grows larger with each new family addition, the body dimensions—length 3,550mm, width 1,630mm, height 1,490mm, and wheelbase 2,300mm—maintain the compact nature of the base model. It is powered by the 875cc TwinAir engine already available in its home market, with specifications of 77kW (105ps) at 5,500rpm and 155Nm (15.8kgm) at 2,500rpm. It also achieves a remarkably low CO2 emission figure of 95g/km.
The target audience is envisioned as young, active men, but to also cater to the needs of female drivers, attention has been paid to color and material trends. The pop yellow body color used on the concept car features a special three-layer coating that results in a hue close to white, emphasizing the body shape while also imbuing it with a pop and unique character. The interior adopts the same styling concept. The seats, covered in high-tech fabric with yellow chamois leather, are inspired by the "Diamond" seats. Black leather surrounds them, creating a youthful atmosphere.
In line with its sporty character, the exterior features high-gloss chrome parts and 17-inch chrome shadow wheels with a new double-spoke design and plastic inserts. The tires are 205/40R17, equipped with perforated brake discs.
Although it is called a concept car, its specifications suggest it could be driven as is, making its potential for commercial production seem high.
