EV Model "BMW i3" and Sporty Plug-in Hybrid "BMW i8" Planned
Since 2007, under the banner of "Project i," BMW has been developing "megacity vehicles" designed to minimize environmental impact. These include the electric MINI E and BMW ActiveE, as well as the Vision EfficientDynamics plug-in hybrid concept car. While not previously disclosed, the company announced that these models were intended for commercial release in 2013 under a new sub-brand. Today's launch marks the realization of that vision.
This sub-brand will initially introduce two models: the all-electric BMW i3 and the BMW i8, a sporty, ultra-efficient vehicle based on the Vision EfficientDynamics. Both models utilize the "Life Drive" architecture, featuring lightweight aluminum in the powertrain sections and high-strength, lightweight CFRP (carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic) for the passenger cell. This construction effectively offsets the added weight of the motor and battery, contributing to improved driving dynamics and extended range.
Regarding BMW i, Ian Robertson, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, stated at the BMW i launch press conference in Munich, "We aim to provide products and solutions that meet the rapidly evolving mobility needs in urban areas, and to further promote BMW ConnectedDrive, our iDrive control system and services integrated with the internet and other technologies."
Venture Capital Firm "BMW i Ventures" Also Established
As Ian Robertson mentioned, BMW i aims to address the rapidly changing customer needs, including the growing demand for alternative powertrains like electric and hybrid vehicles. Furthermore, the company emphasized innovation in advanced navigation systems, offering features such as parking space information, local data, and route planning with public transport integration.
Concurrently with the launch of BMW i, BMW has established "BMW i Ventures," a venture capital firm based in New York, with an investment of 100 million euros. BMW i Ventures will make strategic investments in companies developing mobility services, aiming to expand BMW i's product and service offerings in the long term.
As its first investment, BMW i Ventures has acquired a stake in MyCityWay, a company that already provides mobile applications announcing public transport and parking availability. BMW plans to continue seeking partnerships to further develop its mobility services.
Vehicle production will be based at the BMW Leipzig plant. By integrating various technologies, including electric motors, power electronics, high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, and other services that can be used beyond automotive applications, the company aims to benefit not only customers but also to foster employment and skill development. An investment of approximately 400 million euros is planned for the Leipzig plant in 2013, which will include the introduction of new facilities and the creation of around 800 new jobs.
