Paris Motor Show 2022 Report Part 1: The Excitement Born from Ecology x Design | Le Mondial de l’Auto

An Opportunity for an Intelligent Show

Similarly interesting was the redefinition of lightweight vehicles, known as "quadricycles" in Europe. Traditionally, the most popular power unit for this category was a 500cc general-purpose diesel engine.
While driving requires a moped license, they were previously drivable without one, leading to the term "sans permis" (without a license) in France. This also created an image of them as alternative transportation for the elderly who found it difficult to renew their regular driver's licenses, or for drivers whose licenses were suspended due to traffic violations.
This year's show, however, featured several attempts to transform these "sans permis" vehicles into BEVs, giving them more distinctive and meaningful designs to position them as a viable option for next-generation mobility.
The Microlino, a BEV from Swiss-based Micro Mobility Systems, which manufactures in Italy, evokes the legendary Isetta microcar. When asked about the background of their decision to participate in Paris after gauging market reactions with concept cars at Geneva, an executive explained, "France is an important market for 'sans permis' vehicles within Europe."
XEV
The XEV, designed in Turin, Italy, and already in production in China, also boasts a modern style that sets it apart from traditional "sans permis" vehicles. The design was led by Ian Gray and Advah Yogeph, both former senior designers at JAC's Turin studio. The use of 3D printing allows for complex shapes and diverse customization options. Furthermore, a version with a cartridge-based battery was also unveiled this time.
Kiloow Bagnole
Another prime example is the "Bagnole" (French for jalopy) from startup Kiloow. The slogan "Moins c’est mieux" (Less is more) directly echoes the modernist architect Mies van der Rohe's famous phrase.
As the slogan "Slower, shorter distances" suggests, the driving range on a full charge is 70 km (140 km with an option), and the maximum speed is limited to 80 km/h. This is a strong antithesis to the phrase "faster, further" that French car enthusiasts often favor.

The price starts at 9,999 euros (approximately 1.46 million yen). Designer Léo Choisel was born in 1990. "The first car I drove after getting my license was an original MINI from 1994, and I've also driven a Porsche 911 in my varied driving history," he recalls. He then worked as a car designer for eight years. Having understood cars and their world, this is the state of understanding he has reached.
The backdrop for this array of ambitious new designs is clearly the city, which, as mentioned at the outset, is compelled to fundamentally reconsider the role of the automobile. In this sense, this year's Paris show held the potential for excitement, reborn as an intelligent show that distinguishes itself from mere displays of flashy concept cars.
