BMW 1 Series: Major Exterior Redesign
BMW has facelifted its C-segment premium compact car, the 1 Series, and will publicly unveil it at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March. The front and rear designs have been updated to align with the existing lineup, and the powertrain has been renewed with the addition of a newly developed three-cylinder diesel engine, alongside interior and exterior refinements.

Refined with BMW's Latest Design Language
The BMW 1 Series, announced as the 2015 model in Europe, draws attention with significant changes to its front and rear designs for both the 3-door and 5-door models. In its ten years since launch, the 1 Series has achieved global sales of approximately two million units, making it a popular model. As a compact FR model in the C-segment, it has been embraced by customers who prioritize driving dynamics.
Its C-segment rivals, as you know, are primarily FF-layout vehicles such as the Volkswagen Golf and Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The 1 Series stands out as the only FR car in the C-segment, and this packaging is likely a key factor in its popularity.
The latest facelifted model features a completely redesigned front face, moving away from its previous somewhat playful expression. The adoption of horizontally oriented headlights gives it a sharper, more determined look, reminiscent of the 2 Series, and enhances its sporty appearance. LED daytime running lights are now standard, with an option for full LED headlights.
The rear combination lights have also been updated to match the headlights, featuring L-shaped, horizontally oriented LED lights that extend to the tailgate. This design, which evokes a connection to the 3 Series and 5 Series, is unmistakably BMW.

A Rich Lineup of Diesel Engines
The engines are also a highlight of the new 1 Series. All have been updated to the latest generation of gasoline and diesel engines. The top model, the "M135i M Performance," features a 3-liter inline six-cylinder turbo engine with increased output from 235kW (320ps) to 240kW (326ps) and maximum torque from 450Nm (45.9kgm), available in both FR and 4WD configurations.
Diesel engines, increasingly popular in the Japanese market, have also transitioned to the latest generation. The "116d," replacing the previous "114d" as the entry-level model, switches from a 2-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine to a 1.5-liter inline three-cylinder turbo engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Although the displacement has been significantly reduced, the maximum output remains unchanged at 85kW (116ps), while the maximum torque has increased from 260Nm (26.5kgm) to 270Nm (27.5kgm).
The 116d is also available in an "116d EfficientDynamics Edition," which further optimizes aerodynamics through revised body and engine compartment shapes, and the addition of active air flaps, prioritizing fuel efficiency. This edition is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, achieving a Cd value of 0.29, an impressive European combined fuel economy of 29.4 km/liter, and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. While the standard 116d also boasts excellent figures of 27.0 km/liter and 97g/km, the 116d EfficientDynamics Edition surpasses these.
The other diesel engines are all 2-liter four-cylinder turbo units paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, with power outputs varying by tuning. The "118d" offers a maximum output of 110kW (150ps) and 320Nm (32.6kgm) of torque, the "120d" provides 140kW (190ps) and 400Nm (40.7kgm), and the "125d" delivers 165kW (224ps) and 450Nm (45.8kgm).

Three Styling Packages
While there are no major changes to the interior, a high-resolution 6.5-inch display, automatic climate control, rain sensor, radio, and iDrive system are standard on all models. In addition to the standard specification, customers can choose from Sport Line, Urban Line, and M Sport Package design options.
As part of the driver assistance systems, options include Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, an automatic parking assistant for tight spaces, a rearview camera for easier rear visibility, and a speed limit information system.
In addition to the standard Intelligent Emergency Call and BMW TeleServices, internet mobility services are available as an option. These services, equipped with a SIM card, offer access to BMW Online, real-time traffic information, and online entertainment features.
Furthermore, these online services can be integrated with the iDrive system using smartphone applications, allowing for intuitive and secure control. The Professional Navigation system has also been upgraded in the new model; for the first three years after vehicle registration, map updates are automatically performed free of charge via the SIM card.
The new 1 Series, with its sportier appearance, is expected to arrive in Japan as early as this summer. Given BMW's focus on diesel engines, many users are likely hoping for the introduction of the latest diesel-powered models in the C-segment premium 1 Series. To further differentiate itself from competing brands, a diesel engine lineup would certainly be a welcome addition.
