Mercedes-Benz Unveils the GLE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz will unveil its new SUV, the "GLE Coupe," at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show in January 2015. This model is a coupe version derived from the existing "M-Class," similar to the relationship between BMW's "X5" and "X6." Concurrently, Mercedes will reorganize its SUV model names, changing them to reflect their class with an alphabet following the "GL" designation.

Rebuilding the SUV Lineup

The new model name, "GLE Coupe," signifies three elements: it is an SUV (indicated by "GL"), it belongs to the E-Class segment (indicated by "E"), and it features a stylish, coupe-like design (indicated by "Coupe"). With the introduction of the "GLE Coupe," Mercedes will also sequentially rename the existing "GLK" and "M-Class" to "GLC" and "GLE," respectively. The strategy is to assign an alphabet to the "GL" prefix that corresponds to the existing series, making the class immediately understandable and ensuring consistency with other models.

Therefore, Mercedes-Benz's SUV lineup will be organized as follows: the "GLA," using the same FF platform as the "A-Class"; models using the FR platform of the "C-Class" will be renamed from "GLK" to "GLC"; the existing "M-Class" will become the "GLE," signifying an E-Class equivalent SUV; and the full-size SUV "GL" will be renamed "GLS." The historic "G-Class" will retain its name, continuing to symbolize Mercedes' SUV heritage. Naturally, these three-letter designations will be followed by a three-digit number indicating the engine type and an alphabet for the powertrain.

Viewing it this way, the positioning of the "GLE Coupe" becomes clear. Its body size is equivalent to an E-Class SUV, combined with a stylish, coupe-like design. In essence, it mirrors the relationship of BMW's "X6" to its "X5"—an analogy that further clarifies its role.

Furthermore, a key strategy currently pursued by Mercedes is the lineup of coupe-like four-door models across various categories. Beyond the "CLA" and "CLS," this coupe style has also been applied to station wagons, as seen in the "CLA Shooting Brake" and "CLS Shooting Brake." This trend towards coupe-like designs has now extended to the SUV segment.

A New Model Positioned with AMG

Another significant aspect is the increasing formalization of Mercedes' sub-brands, such as "AMG" and "Maybach." The model unveiled this time is the "GLE 450 AMG Coupe." This model plays a role in the strategy to re-categorize "AMG" as a performance model lineup under "Mercedes AMG," and it also represents a new series within the Mercedes AMG brand.

Simply put, it bridges the gap between traditional AMG models, which featured engine and chassis tuning like the "E 63 AMG," and models with cosmetic tuning called "AMG Sport Package." The key difference from previous models is the enhanced engine power.

While the exact roadmap for the Mercedes AMG brand has not yet been announced, it is conceivable that for the "GLE Coupe," if a high-performance model bearing the Mercedes AMG name were to be released as the "Mercedes AMG GLE 63 Coupe," the "GLE 450 AMG Coupe" would represent the next tier. Furthermore, it's plausible that a "GLE 400 Coupe AMG Sport Package," featuring only styling enhancements with a standard engine, might be offered as an option, although this is also unconfirmed.

While it may seem complex in writing, it's best understood as a three-tiered approach under AMG's supervision: full-fledged complete models, lightly tuned models, and styling models. By having AMG plan these models, the intention is to further solidify the "sporty image of AMG." In any case, Mercedes is demonstrating its commitment to catering to a wider range of markets, including niche segments, through sub-brand and name changes.

Incidentally, in Germany, the name of the latest "C-Class" has been changed to "Mercedes AMG C 63" (previously "Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG"), and this naming convention will be applied sequentially to other models.

A Four-Door Coupe Based on the M-Class

Returning to the new "GLE Coupe," which positions the GLE 450 AMG Coupe as its current top model, this series is a four-door coupe based on the "M-Class." Its stylish body design, emphasizing a wider and lower stance than the "M-Class," and the sporty appearance created by large-diameter wheels are its most notable features.

While the wheelbase remains the same as the "M-Class" at 2,915mm, the vehicle height is reduced by 65mm to 1,731mm. The width has been increased by 77mm to 2,003mm, and the length extended by 96mm to 4,900mm. Complementing these dimensions, the greenhouse has been narrowed, and design elements such as a gently sloping rear window towards the back and taillights reminiscent of the "S-Class Coupe" have been incorporated to enhance its coupe-like Mercedes aesthetic.

The engine lineup consists of three types: a 3.0-liter V6 direct-injection twin-turbo diesel producing 190kW (258ps) for the "GLE 350 d 4MATIC Coupe"; a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo producing 245kW (333ps) for the "GLE 400 4MATIC Coupe"; and an enhanced version of this engine, producing 270kW (367ps), for the "GLE 450 AMG Coupe," also a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo.

All models are equipped with the 9-speed automatic transmission "9G-TRONIC." However, while the GLE 350 d 4MATIC Coupe and GLE 400 4MATIC Coupe utilize a 4WD system with a 50:50 front-to-rear torque split, the GLE 450 AMG Coupe features a 40:60 split, allocating more torque to the rear wheels to provide a more rear-wheel-drive-like driving experience.

The "AIRMATIC" suspension is standard on the GLE 450 AMG Coupe, incorporating the continuously variable damping system "ADS PLUS." The other two grades come standard with the "AGILITY CONTROL" steel suspension, but the AIRMATIC and ADS PLUS can be optionally equipped.

Mercedes Targets Niche Markets with the GLE

Additionally, the GLE 450 AMG Coupe is equipped with "DYNAMIC SELECT," a vehicle stability control system that integrates chassis, suspension, and steering wheel control, enabling adaptation from off-road driving to sporty on-road performance. This system can be switched between five modes—Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, and Sport Plus—via a dial, adjusting the characteristics of the suspension and steering accordingly.

This DYNAMIC SELECT system also interacts with the interior display, engine sound, and LED headlights, creating appropriate ambiance for each mode. When Sport and Sport Plus modes are selected, the "Active Curve System" for rollover prevention is automatically activated.

The front and rear large bumpers, rear spoiler, and 21-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke design alloy wheels are also exclusive items for the GLE 450 AMG Coupe, not found on other grades. While the lower two grades use 275/50R20 tires for both front and rear, the GLE 450 AMG Coupe is equipped with 275/45R21 tires at the front and 315/40R21 at the rear. Furthermore, 22-inch tires, sized 285/40R22 front and 325/35R22 rear, are available as an option.

The interior largely follows the design of the "M-Class," but all models feature a larger 8-inch display. The GLE 450 AMG Coupe is further distinguished by sports seats, an Nappa leather D-shaped steering wheel, carbon-look trim, and aluminum pedals as exclusive equipment.

Mercedes' expansion strategy involves not only coupe models for sedans but also the addition of coupe variants for station wagons and SUVs, targeting niche markets. By reorganizing its brands, including the sub-brands "Mercedes AMG" and "Mercedes-Maybach" and streamlining model names, Mercedes aims to catch up with BMW and Audi, who currently lead in production volume. The next move from this awakened giant is eagerly anticipated.
