SUVs with 0-100 km/h Acceleration in 4.2 Seconds

In 2013,The third-generation BMW X5andThe X6, entering its second generation in 2014,will be joined by the X5 M and X6 M, engineered by M, at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Both models are powered by a 4.4-liter V8 M TwinPower Turbo engine, featuring twin-scroll turbochargers, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, Valvetronic, and direct injection. It produces a maximum output of 423 kW (575 hp) at 6,000-6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 750 Nm between 2,000-5,000 rpm, an increase of 70 Nm over the previous generation.

The transmission is an 8-speed M Steptronic with DriveLogic. Its programming closely mimics that of an M Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT), enabling fast and direct gear changes. It also features a creep-on-demand function for low-speed assistance, a first for a torque converter automatic. A launch control function is also integrated. The shift from a 6-speed to an 8-speed transmission also contributes to improved fuel efficiency and ride comfort.

The drivetrain is BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, utilizing an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to infinitely vary torque distribution between the front and rear axles from 0 to 100 percent. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has also been enhanced with an M Dynamic Mode, in addition to on/off settings. This sporty mode allows for slight wheel slip, enabling controlled drifts. When deactivated, active safety interventions are significantly reduced, allowing for sporty driving within the limits of the driver's skill.

Both the X5 M and X6 M boast a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed limited to 250 km/h. Despite their SUV-like acceleration, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (EU values) have been improved by 20 percent, achieving 13.9-11.1 L/100km (approximately 7.2-9.0 km/L) and 258 g/km, respectively.

Tires with Different Aspect Ratios Front and Rear

The design features characteristic M elements such as a front apron with large air intakes, a kidney grille with double bars, distinctive two-legged door mirrors, side grilles and Air Breathers with M logos, a rear apron integrated with a diffuser, and quad chrome exhaust tips. The X6 M further enhances its sporty appearance with a rear spoiler similar to that found on the M3 and M4.

The chassis, lowered by 10mm, features double-wishbone front suspension and an integral-link self-leveling air suspension at the rear as standard, both engineered by M. Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) is also equipped, allowing for adjustments in three stages: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus.

The tires, with different aspect ratios front and rear, are standard Pirelli P Zero in size 285/40R20 front and 325/35R20 rear, paired with light alloy wheels. An optional set is available with larger Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP tires (285/35R21 front, 325/30R21 rear) on lightweight forged wheels.

The brakes utilize ventilated discs made from composite materials, a technology derived from racing, offering high stopping power, precise feedback, light weight, and excellent heat resistance, according to BMW. The brake lining area has been increased by 50 percent compared to the previous generation, while reducing weight by 1.6 kg. The calipers, finished in metallic blue with M logos, feature a 6-piston fixed setup at the front and a single-piston floating setup at the rear.

The interior boasts newly developed M leather steering wheel with aluminum paddles, an M gearshift lever, M sport seats upholstered in Merino leather, leather-covered instrument panel trim, an Anthracite roof liner, aluminum interior trim, door sills with model designation, and knee pads and an M footrest for the driver's seat.

The optional Head-Up Display has also been customized for M models, including a shift indicator, tachometer, and shift lights.

BMW X5 M & X6 M

Standard equipment includes various driver assistance systems and the "BMW ConnectedDrive" infotainment system found in the new X5 and X6, along with an automatic tailgate, automatic climate control, and Park Distance Control with an optional rearview camera. The adaptive LED headlights feature BMW Selective Beam, anti-dazzle high beam, and active cornering functions. The vehicles also support BMW Individual for personalized customization.
