The Latest F Model in the Lineage from LFA
Lexus has announced the "RC F", a sporty version based on the new two-door coupe "Tokyo Motor ShowRC", which was just unveiled at theRC". The "RC F" had its world premiere at theDetroit Motor Show.
The RC F's engine is the same 2UR-GSE 5-liter V8 naturally aspirated unit found in the "IS F". However, while the IS F had a maximum output of 311kW (423ps) and peak torque of 505Nm (51.5kgm), the RC F achieves over 330kW (450ps) and 520Nm (53kgf) through the use of titanium valves, forged connecting rods, a newly designed cylinder head, and optimized exhaust systems. With the "LFA", the pinnacle of Lexus sports models, now out of production, the RC F surpasses the LS 600h's integrated maximum output of 445ps, making it the most powerful production Lexus model.
While boasting high output, it also considers environmental impact by operating in Atkinson cycle at low, constant engine speeds for improved fuel efficiency, and switching to Otto cycle at high RPMs for increased power. Although specific fuel economy figures are yet to be determined, it is expected to be better than the JC08 mode's 8.1km/l, aiming to surpass the IS F.
The transmission is an 8-speed automatic, the 8 Speed SPDS. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a torque-vectoring differential (TVD), a first for Lexus.
The TVD optimizes driving force during cornering, enhancing vehicle stability and enabling quicker turns. These settings can be switched between "Normal," "Slalom," and "Track" in three stages, altering the car's behavior.
The body utilizes Lexus's latest technologies, including "Laser Screw Welding," which allows for narrower spot weld spacing introduced in the LS, ensuring high rigidity. Despite this, the vehicle weight is kept under 1,800kg. Furthermore, applying the "Carbon Package," which replaces the engine hood, roof, and rear wing with carbon fiber, can reduce weight by approximately 10kg.
The suspension is an independent coil spring setup for both front and rear. The newly designed 19-inch aluminum wheels, available in three designs, are also lightweight, contributing to nimble handling by reducing unsprung weight.
The exterior features cooling and aerodynamic elements refined from the LFA, such as the engine hood air vents, front cooling ducts, and an active rear spoiler that automatically deploys at 50mph (approx. 80km/h).
The prominent "spindle grille," Lexus's brand icon, features a special mesh structure for its lower half, formed by the letter "F." Additionally, design cues of "L" or "F" are incorporated throughout, including the daytime running lights and the line extending from the front fender slits to the side, mimicking an "L."
The interior also features exclusive, high-back seats that envelop the driver, created using the seamless foam molding technique adopted in the "GS". The pedals have a non-slip design with an "L" motif. The instrument panel, inspired by aircraft cockpits, displays necessary information depending on the mode, including digital and analog speedometers, tachometer, TVD torque monitor, G-meter, oil temperature gauge, water temperature gauge, and a stopwatch.
The RC F is drawing attention not only as a high-performance Lexus coupe but also as a base vehicle for racing machines. The production model is scheduled for release in the latter half of 2014.
