Tokyo Motor ShowWhile the new compact SUV, the "GLA," wasn't even present at the Tokyo Motor Show, the "Concept GLA 45 AMG," a high-performance version of the "GLA," has already appeared at the LA Motor Show. Despite being labeled a "concept," aside from the color scheme, it's expected to go into production largely as is.

The "Concept GLA 45 AMG" shares its platform with the newA-ClassandCLA-Classmodels, including the most powerful "A 45 AMG" and "CLA 45 AMG."A 45 AMGIt is powered by the AMG-tuned M133, a 1,991cc inline-4 direct-injection gasoline turbo engine producing 180 hp per liter, mounted in the front. This engine is also found in the "A 45 AMG" and "CLA 45 AMG."


With numerous enhancements including a twin-scroll turbocharger and a dedicated exhaust system, it achieves the highest performance for a compact SUV, with a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and a peak torque of 450 Nm (45.9 kgm).

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT (7-speed dual-clutch sports transmission) inherited from the "SLS AMG," provides continuous variable front-to-rear torque distribution from 100:0 to 50:50 via an electro-hydraulic multi-disc clutch. This maximizes traction while ensuring efficient driving. It ensures drive force even on wet or slippery surfaces and accommodates sporty driving styles, delivering a controllable 4WD experience that can be enjoyed even on the track.

0-100 km/h in Under 5 Seconds

The "Concept GLA 45 AMG" displayed at the show features a red accent line on the front grille and door mirrors, a large rear wing, "Turbo AMG" emblems on the body sides, and a high-gloss painted roof rail, compared to the standard GLA-Class. It also sports dedicated aero parts, including a high-gloss painted front lip spoiler, side sills, and rear underbody spoiler.


Additionally, "45" lettering and an "AMG" logo above the front windshield were added for show effect, along with an oval-design dual finisher (AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps), ensuring a sporty appearance.


The wheels are 21-inch, 10-spoke designs in black, matching the aero parts, and are fitted with large 255/35R21 tires.

The only performance data currently released is 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 5 seconds. However, it complies with Euro 6 emissions standards and achieves a European combined fuel consumption of less than 7 liters per 100 km (over 14.2 km per liter).


At the LA Motor Show, alongside the simultaneously world-premiered "SLS AMG GT Final Edition" and "AMG Vision Gran Turismo,"SLS AMG GT Final Editionthe "Concept GLA 45 AMG" garnered significant attention from visitors as a more realistic vehicle. In the US, where SUV demand is high, there's a trend of customers switching from traditional two-door coupes and compact sedans to smaller SUVs. The "Concept GLA 45 AMG" should have strongly appealed to these buyers.
