Cadillac's Top SUV Transitions to a New Generation
On November 19,LA Motor ShowCadillac unveiled the all-new "Escalade," the flagship SUV of Cadillac, at the LA Motor Show. While the new "Cadillac Escalade" had its national debut at a New York event on October 9, this marks its first exhibition at a motor show. On display was the "Escalade ESV," which features a wheelbase 14 inches (355mm) longer than the standard model.

The "Escalade ESV" with its Overwhelming Body Size
As you know, the "Cadillac Escalade" is Cadillac's full-size SUV, also sold in Japan. The new model introduced this time is the fourth generation. The first-generation "Escalade" appeared in 1999, based on the GMC "Yukon Denali." The new model shares its platform with the new Chevrolet "Tahoe" and "Suburban" (long wheelbase), the new GMC "Yukon" and "Yukon XL" (long wheelbase), and GMC's flagship models, the "Yukon Denali" and "Yukon XL Denali" (long wheelbase), all announced in September 2013.
With an exterior that evolves Cadillac's design language of "Art & Science," the new Escalade features a large front grille and vertical LED headlights, lending a luxurious image akin to other Cadillacs. The simple, also vertically designed taillights offer a design that can be considered a natural evolution for those familiar with previous Escalades. From any angle, the exterior design maintains the concept, making it instantly recognizable as an "Escalade."
The standard Escalade has a wheelbase of 2,946mm, while the Escalade ESV extends the wheelbase by 14 inches (355mm). The overall lengths are 5,180mm and 5,698mm, respectively. The extended space in the Escalade ESV is allocated to the third-row seating and a luggage compartment that is over 60 percent larger than the standard Escalade. The size difference between the two models is clear from the exterior; the way the rear door of the Escalade ESV drops vertically behind the rear wheelhouse, rather than over it, further illustrates the difference in size. The Escalade ESV can accommodate up to 8 passengers.
The body dimensions are: standard Escalade, 5,180mm (length) x 2,044mm (width) x 1,889mm (height); Escalade ESV, 5,698mm (length) x 2,044mm (width) x 1,880mm (height). The latter is 356mm longer in wheelbase and 518mm longer in overall length than the standard model, a difference that is striking. Even by American standards, where full-size SUVs are not uncommon, the Escalade ESV possessed an overwhelming presence.
The drivetrain is available in 2WD and 4WD. The engine is a new 6.2-liter V8 unit with a cylinder deactivation system and flex-fuel capability.
Peak output is 420 hp (313 kW) at 5,600 rpm, with a maximum torque of 623 Nm (63.5 kgm) at 4,100 rpm, representing a 5% and 10% increase over the previous model, respectively. This is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with tip shift (manual mode).
Cadillac's electronically controlled suspension, "Magnetic Ride Control," is also featured on the higher-grade models.

An Interior of Utmost Luxury
In contrast to the advanced image conveyed by the LED headlights, a hallmark of the exterior, the interior is designed as a classic luxury space, lavishly using genuine leather and wood. The use of enhanced sound insulation materials and Bose Active Noise Cancellation technology is said to create a dramatically quieter cabin.
The center console featuresCadillac "ATS"the cutting-edge infotainment system, CUE (Cadillac User Experience), familiar from its use in the Cadillac ATS. By connecting mobile devices and tablet PCs, users can easily enjoy hands-free calls and music. The monitor is an 8-inch size with touch control and voice recognition capabilities.
Additionally, within the instrument cluster in front of the driver, a high-resolution 12.3-inch digital driver information center display replaces the traditional analog gauges. This is combined with a head-up display that projects four menus onto the windshield, showing driving information to the driver. A rear-seat entertainment system with a 29-inch screen, supporting Blu-ray and DVD playback, can also be optioned.
As expected of a modern vehicle, safety features are also comprehensive. The new Escalade is equipped with short-range radar and ultrasonic sensors front and rear, featuring alert functions to prevent low-speed collisions and automatic braking that brings the vehicle to a complete stop. These safety features include forward collision alert, lane departure warning system, and a safety alert seat with a vibrating system that warns the driver of potential collision risks. Furthermore, it introduces a front center-mounted airbag designed to protect occupants on the opposite diagonal in the event of an offset crash.
To improve aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency, the body sides feature no openings. An active radiator air shutter that closes at certain speeds, along with a lightweight aluminum front hood and liftgate panel, are employed. The rear window wiper is designed to be housed within the rear spoiler. These details reflect Cadillac's commitment as a luxury brand.
The wheels are 20 inches for the standard specification, with optional 22-inch sizes available. The brakes feature a new four-wheel disc brake system with DuraLife brake rotors, which double the service life. The standard anti-theft system, with its high security features including intrusion sensors, tilt sensors, and glass break sensors, is befitting of a luxury vehicle.
The 2015 model Escalade, which appeared at the LA Motor Show, is scheduled to begin production at the Arlington, Texas plant next spring. While the introduction timing for Japan is undecided, we anticipate its arrival between the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015.
