The 2014 Model Emphasizes its GT Character
The day before the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan announced the 2014 model of its sports car, the "GT-R." This is the first update since Mr.Mizuno Toshikazu, who is said to be the father of the GT-R, stepped away from its development.
This minor change defines the name "GT-R" as GT = "Grand Tourer" and R = "overwhelming speed based on race technology," with the primary focus being to enhance its performance as a Grand Tourer, not just its speed. Specifically, by making detailed adjustments to the chassis and suspension settings, the company has focused on improving road-following capability and vehicle stability.
The exterior has also been modified, adopting LED positioning lamps with a signature inspired by a lightning flash. The headlights also feature four LEDs, each for high beam, main beam, far beam, and wide beam. The round, four-light rear combination lamps are also LEDs.
Inside, the quality of the fashionable interior, available with the "Premium Edition," has been particularly enhanced. A new ivory color has been added, and the application of semi-aniline leather from the front seats has been extended to the rear seats, covering the entire cabin space.
A new body color, "Gold Flake Red Pearl," has been introduced, made by mixing glass flakes coated in 24-karat gold into red paint. Including this new color, a total of seven colors are available.
The 2014 model will go on sale on December 2nd, immediately after the Tokyo Motor Show. Prices were announced as 9,051,000 yen for the "Pure Edition," 9,933,000 yen for the "Black Edition," and 10,111,500 yen for the "Premium Edition."
A Model Engineered by NISMO Also Appears
Announced at the same time was the "GT-R NISMO," engineered by NISMO, which handles Nissan's motorsports activities. This is the fastest GT-R model to date, having recorded a lap time of 7 minutes 8.679 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the NISMO-exclusive option pack installed.
The 3.8-liter V6 twin-turbo engine, based on the standard GT-R, features high-efficiency, large-capacity turbochargers used in racing, and optimized ignition timing for each cylinder. This results in a maximum output of 600 ps (441 kW), a 50 ps increase over the 2014 standard model, and a maximum torque of 652 Nm (66.5 kgm), a 20 Nm increase.
Both front and rear suspensions are equipped with custom Bilstein Damptronic dampers. To transmit the powerful output, special high-stiffness hub bolts, wide-rim front wheels, and large-diameter, low-profile tires (255/40ZRF20 front, 285/35ZRF20 rear) are used.
Furthermore, as a unique measure from the manufacturer, structural adhesive is used in addition to spot welding to reinforce the body joints.
The exterior features exclusive aerodynamic enhancements, with carbon fiber used in a wide range of parts, including the front bumper, under cover, and rear spoiler. At 300 km/h, the downforce generated is 100 kg greater than that of the standard model.
The seats are RECARO's exclusive NISMO carbon back bucket seats. The steering wheel is a 3-spoke Alcantara-wrapped unit with a red center mark and red stitching, incorporating feedback from racing drivers. Additionally, red stitching is used throughout the interior, creating a racy atmosphere.
The GT-R NISMO is scheduled to go on sale starting in Japan at the end of February 2014, with subsequent releases in the United States and Europe. The price is 15,015,000 yen.
This Japanese sports car will, of course, be publicly unveiled at theTokyo Motor Show, held from November 22nd.
