Japan Debut for the "XL1" Plug-in Hybrid and More


Volkswagen Group Japan announced the details of its exhibition at the Tokyo Motor Show, held from Friday, November 22nd, at Tokyo Big Sight.

World Premiere to be Announced on the First Press Day


Volkswagen will exhibit 17 vehicles at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. A world premiere is also planned, with the name and specifications to be announced on Wednesday, November 20th, the first day of the press event.


Among the vehicles making their Japan debut isFrankfurt Motor Show in September, which garnered significant attention for its technology and styling when its production model was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. This PHEV (plug-in hybrid)"XL1"is a two-seater capable of traveling 100km on just 0.9 liters of diesel, with a 50km range in EV mode. Its gullwing doors and carbon fiber reinforced polymer body contribute to a remarkably light curb weight of just 795kg.


In the EV category, the "e-up!"", for which orders have already begun overseas, and the "e-Golf", with a top speed of 140km/h and a range of up to 190km on a single charge, will also be featured. Visitors can experience Volkswagen's vision of the near future of automobiles.

Additionally, the newly redesigned "Golf Variant", which has undergone a full model change for the first time in four years and is scheduled for introduction in Japan soon, will be displayed alongside the more stylish "Golf Variant R-Line", the "Passat Variant R-Line," and the "Golf R", touted as "the most powerful Golf" and equipped with a 2-liter TSI turbo engine producing 300 horsepower.


Volkswagen also made its debut in the WRC rally series this year. Driver Sébastien Ogier immediately secured the drivers' championship, followed by co-driver and manufacturer's world championships, marking a meteoric rise. The race car, the "Polo R WRC," will also make its first appearance in Japan. Other attractions include the "The Beetle Cabriolet 50's," a modern interpretation of the 1950s Beetle Cabriolet, promising to delight visitors.
