Adopts an Electric Metal Roof, Following the Predecessor
BMW has released images of the new "4 Series Cabriolet," which succeeds the3 Series Cabriolet"3 Series Cabriolet." It inherits the new design, mechanisms, and driving pleasure adopted in the "4 Series Coupé." The actual vehicle's world premiere is expected to be at the American4 Series Coupéopen model. The world premiere of the actual vehicle is expected to be at the AmericanLA Motor Show, which is scheduled to be held from November 20th.
Except for the overall height, which is 7mm higher than the "4 Series Coupé" at 1,384mm, the body dimensions, the distinctive proportions with extremely short front and rear overhangs, and the wide kidney grille connected to the headlights are all inherited from the "4 Series Coupé." However, while the "Coupé" has a flowing C-pillar that extends near the rear end, the "Cabriolet" features a slightly more independent trunk lid.
The roof is an electric metal top, similar to the "3 Series Cabriolet," and is divided into three sections that are stored in the trunk. When opening or closing the roof, the trunk lid opens on rear hinges, and all operations can be completed with a single switch. The opening and closing time is just 20 seconds. It can be opened or closed while driving at speeds up to 18 km/h.
The interior features seat belts for each seat. The optional sport seats are equipped with neck warmers for the driver and front passenger, allowing for comfortable open-air motoring even in winter. The use of new materials for the roof lining and interior is said to have significantly increased quietness when the top is closed compared to the previous model.
The engine lineup includes two gasoline engines and one diesel engine, all featuring TwinPower Turbo technology.
The top model, the "435i Cabriolet," is powered by a 3-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 225 kW (306 ps), while the "428i Cabriolet" is equipped with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 180 kW (245 ps).
Furthermore, the "420d Cabriolet" is powered by a 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine producing a maximum output of 135 kW (184 ps).
All models are equipped with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission, and feature an auto start-stop function as standard.
In terms of performance, the "435i Cabriolet" with the 8-speed automatic transmission achieves 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds (5.6 seconds for the 6-speed manual transmission) and a top speed of 250 km/h (limited). The "428i Cabriolet" accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds (same for the 6-speed manual transmission) with a top speed of 250 km/h (limited). The "420d Cabriolet" accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds (same for the 6-speed manual transmission) and has a top speed of 228 km/h (235 km/h for the 6-speed manual transmission).
Additionally, a four-wheel-drive model, the "428i xDrive Convertible," is scheduled to be added in the spring of 2014.
