BMW i3 Details Revealed
BMWHeld an international test drive event for the pre-production model of the "i3," BMW's first mass-produced electric vehicle. To coincide with this, BMW has revealed details of the i3 that were previously undisclosed.

Range Extender Also Appears
Finally, a BMW i3, virtually identical to the production model, has been unveiled. While parts of the body are still camouflaged, we can see the changes from the concept model's appearance. The most significant change is to the doors; the coach doors remain as on the concept model, but the rear doors are considerably shorter.
The structure, which places a CFRP life module for people and luggage on top of a drive module made largely of aluminum responsible for the car's propulsion and driving, is, as already mentioned inToshiFumi Watanabe's Reportis the case.
Located centrally in the drive module, low down, is a 230kg, 22kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The driving range is between 130km and 160km.
The electric motor, weighing just 50kg, is positioned directly above the rear axle, producing a maximum output of 125kW (170ps) and a peak torque of 250Nm. It accelerates from 0-60km/h in 3.7 seconds, 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 150km/h. Thanks to the battery pack's placement and the lightweight motor, it achieves BMW's signature 50:50 front-rear weight distribution. The total weight is 1,195kg, remarkably light for an electric vehicle.
As rumored, it has also been officially confirmed that a range extender version with an additional engine for power generation will be available. In this version, a 650cc two-cylinder gasoline engine is installed next to the electric motor, producing 25kW (34ps) to maintain a certain level of charge. With this, the driving range is extended to approximately 300km.
Another distinctive feature related to driving is what BMW i calls "single-pedal control." While a brake pedal is present, most driving control can be managed using only the accelerator pedal.
Comprehensive Support
Charging takes about 30 minutes to reach 80% with rapid charging. Using the dedicated home charging unit called "BMW i Wallbox" takes about 6 hours for a full charge, and about 8 hours from a standard household outlet, which is not significantly different from existing electric vehicles.
Significant emphasis has been placed on network functions, with SIM cards included as standard in Europe. Connecting to the "BMW ConnectedDrive" service provides full-scale services, including a concierge service, emergency call service, off-vehicle navigation guidance from parking to destination that links with smartphones, and travel itinerary guidance that includes the use of public transportation.
Furthermore, fitting for an electric vehicle, the i3 offers remote air conditioning control via smartphone, and features such as intelligent route recalculation that promotes the use of ECO PRO or ECO PRO+ driving modes prioritizing battery efficiency based on the destination, guidance to charging stations to visit, and prediction of remaining battery level upon arrival.
The battery itself comes with an 8-year or 100,000km warranty.
To address the slow adoption of electric vehicles due to concerns about limited driving range and inconvenient charging infrastructure, BMW i has prepared a support package called "360° ELECTRIC," primarily presenting four initiatives.
The first is support for home charging, including the installation of a Wallbox in private parking spaces.
The second is cooperation with public charging facilities. This addresses the issue of numerous public charging service providers with varying payment and usage methods. The core of this initiative is the introduction of a "ChargeNow card" to unify payment and usage procedures across all providers.
The third involves measures such as allowing temporary use of other BMW models for long-distance travel when the i3 is not suitable, and facilitating car-sharing services.
Finally, there is the provision of a rescue service capable of handling emergencies, including issues specific to electric vehicles, in the event of malfunctions or breakdowns.
Naturally, the specifics of these services will vary by country. However, it clearly conveys BMW's commitment to the i3.
